I took about 10 years of lessons as a youth and now have gone back to playing after a long break. I am playing 0Inventions, Easier Chopin preludes, some Joplin at school (back to college).

Anyway, My neighbor asked me to teach her 11 year old daughter. I dont know if I am qualified to do this... I mean I know the material... and can teach basics. My friend who teaches piano says I should have no problem.

I told my neighbor I would, and got her daughter a book that I am familiar with. I havent begun yet, because she wants to wait till her daughter is through with school. (2 more weeks)

What would be fair to charge? I have NO idea!! When I first took lessons from the neighbor down the street 20 or more years ago, I paid $4 an hour. Is $10 for 45 minutes outlandish? I think 30 minutes is too short for her age, and 1 hour is too long for a beginner.

Any input or guidence?

Thanks!

You don't know if you can teach, yet. So why not do a couple of lessons without charge, and see how it goes. If you are doing Ok, you should charge about a quarter of the minimum usual fee for a qualified teacher. You will have to research it for your area.

Standard rate here is $17 per half hour (my daughter tool lessons last year for a couple months), I am paying $25 for 45 minutes at present.

I know I can teach because 2 of my previous daycare children learned the basics from me.. but I only showed them a little at a time, as I am paid to provide daycare not give lessons. I had one girl finish Thompson's primer in about 3 months. She was VERY smart though... and I would show her a little, play the song for her, and she would do the rest... not formal lessons.

I offered free lessons to my Neighbor because they are always doing things for us, but the wont hear of it... said.. name a price... You are at home, your time is valuable... SO I can haggle them down a bit... I had to haggle them down on what the pay me to take care of their infant. They wanted to pay me what they would pay a daycare center, not what my going rate was... and I cant have them pay me more than I would charge someone else!!!

Anyway...
I would guess $5 for a half hour would be fair then.

Thanks smile
