Piano Teachers lend me your ears!

I am looking for a harmony text which does not fall into the mold of the 'text book'. I have 'Tonal Harmony' by Kostka and Payne. It is a text book - it has little self-check sections so you can ready yourself for the quiz - it is loaded with homework - it is paced - it is not really boring so much as standard.

British text book - by way of contracts - are miracles of condensed, lucid presentation. Perhaps because I am a visual learner it is easier for me to digest a single page of boiled down material than endless chapters to drill like reading. I have only textbook in linquistics and physical chemistry to compare but I have noticed a big difference in both these fields between British and American textbooks.

Other than that, I am not sure if what I am looking for even exists. Most harmony text I have seen present the same type of analysis based upon triad sequences. For some reason this makes me this of classical logic - useful but somewhat unwieldy.
If anyone here is familiar with Gottlob Frege's modernization of logic into a few simple rules, and how it immediately supplanted classical logic as tool - it was clearer, more elegant, more powerful. I wonder of anyone has found as way to move us out of the dark ages of harmonic theory.

Any ideas?

What about harmony are you loking to understand better? I know that Paul Hindemith wrote two volumes (I believe) on compositional principles which involve philsophy as well as specific exercises. I only read through portions of them, but found them quite interesting from a compositional standpoint.

I am reading through "Harmony and Melody: Diatonic Style" by Elie Siegmeister, and there are many things that I already knew, but it has been great to fill up holes in my education, and to tell me what the actual words are for things that I was doing already wink It is actually written very interestingly I think and does not assume any knowledge to begin with. Now if I were in your position, the previous statement would have made me uninterested, but it moves through very fast the beginning foundation, while still giving beginners all the information that they can reread to really ingrain. I am looking forward to reading volume two: Modulation, Chromatic and Modern Styles, but for now I am enjoying #1. Don't know if this is what you are looking for, but I hope it helps. Here is a link for it on amazon:
