This summer I bumped upon a very special upright:
a Lauter from Newark.

The piano was high and had a fallboard that had a hinge in the middle so it completely disappeared on opening under the front panel.

The front panel simultaneously moved into an inclined position and served thus as a music desk.

Serial number was low - I have lost the paper where I wrote it up - something around 4000.

The outer appearance of the piano was not very promising - very worn polish etc, but the keys were intact and clean, hammers in relaively good shape and the sound and touch was very nice - the trebble was still powerful, which is not alwasy the case with old pianos.

I think this piano have been in moderate use. It was now standing in the social room of a sport's club.

Does anyyone know more about the Lauter brand?

Jan-Erik :

From Pierce Piano Atlas :

"LAUTER CO., Est. 1862. Makers of Lauter Piano and Lauter-Humana players. Office and factory on Sussex Ave., Newark, New Jersey. Also made Lenox."

The serial numbers in Pierce range from 20000 (1902) to 54000 (1918).

I cannot speak directly to the upright. I rebuilt a Lauter grand 5'4" for my Mother in Law a few years ago. I can assure you it was made as well as any piano I have taken apart. She was a Jersey girl and loved the fact that it was made in Newark. For it's size it had a nice singing treble and a decent bass as well.
