My dad is visiting us in Florida. He had an angiagram (sp?) last week with a stint (sp?) put in his leg and almost lost a toe to diabetes. He had bypass surgery this time last year.

Saturday he was feeling fine when he got off the plane. Tuesday he stopped eating and started coughing. Yesterday we took him to the emergency room because we were worried about pneumonia. They took an Xray and found no pneumonia but sent him home to drink lots of fluids. They kept him on the same antibiotic the hospital in Baltimore gave him for his toe.

This morning he coughed up some old digested blood and we called 911. The ambulance came and took him to the local hospital. Same hospital I took him to yesterday. He can't move, walk, stand or do anything on his own. He is so terribly weak. They said he had a viral infection and gave him two new meds Cereprate (sp) and Tessalon Pearls.

I'm worried that they sent him home. He is so weak. He has 103 temperature and they sent him home. He can't move.

They were due to fly home Monday. My mom fainted this morning when the ambulance came and they called for a second ambulance for percaution but didn't take her. She's a mess.

Anyhow, should they have sent him home? I was very unimpressed with the hospital yesterday as they didn't do any bloodwork and didn't look at the toe. Today they did both but... I don't know what to think.

what do you think? Did I give you enough info? I'm sorry to bother you but I'm worried sick. Thanks in advance for a response.

Peggy

Yes, go to another ER ASAP. Concerns that come to my mind are possible sepsis(blood bacterial infection), urinary tract infection, pulmonary embolism(clot in the lung), MI, or congestive heart failure.
Bug someone until they listen.
Best of luck; keep us updated.

Oh, this place is the best. Who would've thought an internet forum could possibly save a person's life.

This second hospital did admit my father this evening. He does have pneumonia in the base of the right lung. He's in the right place now. They were so wonderful and professional. The doctor has a wonderful bedside manner and said to my dad "you don't look like you feel so well. Let's see what we can do to make you feel better." And my mom and I gave a sigh of relief thinking Thank God.

So, my friends, your kind and loving prayers do work. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Peggy

Whew! That's good about getting the proper diagnosis, but bad that he's so sick. I hope he'll be recovering quickly. Keep us posted on his progress.

Peggy,

I sincerely hope your he gets to feeling better. I have come to learn that "bug them until someone listens" is, unfortunately, the only way to handle such situations. (No disrespect to the good doctors and nurses on this site--they are simply over worked for the most part.)

Peggy... I think it's sometimes not so much a particular hospital but who happens to be on duty. The medical field, like any other profession, has it's share of good, bad and ugly!

Sounds like your Dad is in good hands. I do hope your Mom has been able to calm herself a bit after all the stress.

I'm glad you were there to help both of them through some difficult moments.

i dont like to second guess anyone, but to write off someone with that constellation of symptoms and history, as "a viral disease", needs to reasses their competence.
