I have so many old favorites. Not one song. I especially like ballads.

But for some reason I'll never forget the words to John Denver's Rhymes & Reasons.

I have a few, for different reasons. One of mine with special meaning is "Daniel" by Elton John.

Before the Deluge -- Jackson Browne -- wonderful piano!

Your Song -- Elton John

Thunder Road -- Bruce Springsteen -- great for driving way too fast on an open highway, or for driving the piano!

"The One" by Elton John. At the time, I was obscessed with someone who unfortunately(or actually fortunately as it would have turned out)didn't reciprocate my out of control sentiments!

But it's one of the few songs I made a point of getting the lyrics down pat so I could sing it while playing it on the piano.

If I had to pick just one:

It's My Life (by Talk Talk, not the No Doubt remake -- it was perfect as is!!!!)

Others:
Make Yourself, Incubus
Crazy, Patsy Cline
Wicked Game, Cris Isaak
Under the Milky Way, the Church

plays,

I relate very well to your choice of Bridge Over Troubled Water. Not sure if that would be the single best choice for me, but that would be a top candidate. I was a very big fan of their's and that song came out at a resonant time for me.

I have two that come to mind instantly, countless others that flood in after...

1) "James" by Billy Joel

2) "Any Major Dude Will Tell You" by Steely Dan

Is everybody's post consistent with jf's "rules"? Or are some just listing song's that move them emotionally one way or another?

While I like "Fields of Gold" cause I'm a Sting fan, I like Bruce Hornsby and the Ranges' "Fields of Grey" even more. I think it's the quintessential country kind of tune that Hornsby was so good at writing. Whenever I hear it, I can imagine myself driving through the roads of rural Virginia where he's from.

FWIW, he was a former tuning customer of mine(excuse the rampant self-congratulatory gesture there:-).

My mom likes that song because it reminds her of her brother. His name was James, not Daniel. But he died when he was a few years old due to spinal meningitis. I think this was in the late 50's or early 60's.

I am a huge fan of the old John Stewart songs... he writes such evocative, haunting, nostalgic lyrics.

As far as my song, I'll have to think about it. There have been sooo many. Maybe Blind Faith, "Can't Find My Way Home..." Hmmm. That would be high on the list, for sure.
John Stewart is a favorite of mine as well!

Do you happen to like Jerry Riopelle as well? I cannot find his sheet music anywhere!

My rock books include:
Jackson Browne
Bruce Sprinsteen
Beatles
Elton John
Billy Joel
U2
Van Morrison
Cat Stevens
Neil Diamond
Paul Simon
Carol King...

Redball Texas Flyer!!

Were you of "a certain age" in Phoenix in the mid to late 70s, by any chance? How did YOU spend your New Year's Eve? Did it include a visit to Celebrity Theater? wink

Arcadia High School '74-'77, you bet! I never made it the Celebrity Theater, but saw Jerry Riopelle several times in Phoenix and Sedona. I've always loved "Walking on Water" and "Candi Barr"

My first concerts were Bread (!) at the Coliseum and Three Dog Night at Legend City! As a 15 year old young buck I was at Springsteen's Born to Run Concert at Grady Gammage. I still haven't recovered!

Also we went up to Arcosanti for a few of the Jackson Browne concerts in high school.

Where do you go to HS?

Jessica - Allman Brothers.

This is always such a shot in the arm to hear. A rock band naming a tune after a girl generally means relationship tune, but in this case, as I understand it, Jessica was one of their daughters. When she was just learning to crawl, the joy experienced by both infant and parent in unison inspired him to express that in music (dunno if it was duane, dickie, greg, or who). An instrumental, it is pure joy. The keyboard part drives it. I've jammed it casually at home with friends, but I always wanted to mount that piano solo in performance. That would be such a high.

I was born the year Glenn Gould stop playing concerts. Coincidence?

ivory--

Started at Saguaro in 72, graduated from Chaparral in 75. Did you go to the Phx Live concert Stewart did at Symphony Hall? It was such a big-time event for Phoenix at the time. I have to dig out my records and get ol' Jerry on the turntable. Of course, I'd also have to dig out my turntable, which means I'd have to find my turntable. Oh, never mind.

Legend City... I haven't thought of that in years. I had my first date there! smile Ditto Toad Hall, Bill Compton and KDKB...
