My sister's ex about 35 years ago once refered to me as "a veritable mine of useless information". One of the things I like about PW is that there are other kindred souls (MattG comes to mind wink ) in this respect here.

Chris

Chris was right (first). It was indeed Handel!

I did not believe I was singled out for unsurpassed genius. I once told one of my students, "Just practice diligently and it will go very well. You have five fingers on each hand just as healthy as mine." I told another, "I was made to work; if you are equally industrious you will be equally successful." Not a small task, though, as it took my publisher 46 years to go through my scores, collect, and publish them! I was sightless at the end of my life, yet I still worked on.

Who am I?

Could be Joseph Haydn but I'm guessing on this one.

I'm thinking Bach.

I'm thinking justme is correct. It was J.S. Bach!

I was contacted to make a recording with my band. I said I'd be honored, proud. Any time. In four days, at noon? Fine. The night before the man who arranged the session was horrified to find out that I hadn't pulled the band together or rehearsed. He asked me what we'd play, and I replied calmly, "Why, we'll play music." The next day when he found me still sleeping at 10:30 he shouted we were due at the studio at noon! I yawned and said, "That's perfect! Now let's see about a band. Look around for some nickels so I can make the telephone go." I and several musicians were soon in a cab heading for the studio. I said "Here's what we're going to play." Humming a few bars, I told each musician what part he was to play. We arrived ten minutes before noon and completed an outstanding recording session. Afterward, one of the recording engineers said, "We must have some more of these dates. This is an excellent example of the wisdom of planning and preparation."

Who am I?

No, not any of the Beatles (is that who you mean?)

Well, I guess I shouldn't let this thread die open-endedly in the forum closing without giving the answer to the last set of clues. (Okay, I guess I had already let it die on its own accord).

It was Thomas "Fats" Waller.

It's been fun with all of you here. Please allow me to end this thread with one last story.

My music was under attack for years, yet I never fought back and always kept my good humor. A director of the Vienna Conservatorium told me to give up on trying to compose and to throw my symphonies into a trash can. It became nearly impossible to have my works performed. The Vienna Philharmonic performed one of my symphonies, but it received such a cold response that they refused to play any of my other works. The powerful music critic Eduard Handslick gave me horrible reviews whenever one of my works was performed, calling one symphony "insatiable rhetoric." Nevertheless, I continued to compose work after work, believing eventually that my works would be accepted. I was correct, and eventually all of Europe was won over. When Emporer Franz Joseph awarded me the Imperial Insignia, and was ready to give me whatever I wanted, even a royal pension, I smiled and simply asked him to stop Hanslick from continuing his wretched reviews. And indeed, at the premiere of my 8th Symphony, the audience booed Hanslick!

Who am I you ask? Anton Bruckner!

I hope you all had fun with this little (19 page) thread. There were some fun and interesting stories along the way, but many, even most of them, told us a story about how someone, a musician, was continually rejected or otherwise had to endure many hardships in his or her life. But perseverence and belief in himself, and maybe even God, pulled him through. A lesson we can all learn from.

Be well my friends.
