My in-laws had me come over to do some work on their computer, which is not unlike asking Conan the Barbarian to voice your piano.
I was able to do a lot of the things that they wanted - reset the home page back where they wanted it, dumped off about 2 gigs of junk collected from the internet and uninstalled no fewer than four copies of AOL. One problem they have though, has me stumped.
The computer will hang up on startup if you do not let it sit long enough that the screen saver comes on. Once the screen saver comes on and you click around it, everything is fine. If you do not wait that long, the first thing you try to open will hang the machine - hang it hard enough that the three button salute (control-alt-delete) has no effect. You have to restart the whole machine.
I went in to the startup tab of MSconfig and eliminated from startup everything that I could identify as not being required, but the problem is still there. There are a number of programs still active in startup that I can not identify, but I hesitate to remove them for fear I will get in over my head.
Computer is an 800mhz Gateway running Wwindows 98.
Any suggestions as to a logical troubleshooting scheme?
