kluurs, the Element is a big box and holds a lot of stuff (by volume, but not weight), but the Forester and the Rav-4 are much more comfortable and ride nicer. The Element is very bouncy. You chose well.
PJ,

You are, without question, one of the most interesting participants on this forum. It's nice to know you!

bcarey,

Exchanging posts with you is my joy ride through life.

Your posts are like high clouds on a summer day, a soft rain in the night, a saxaphone haunting at sunset, a kiss at first light.

Well, I just got one of these 500 miles ago:

http://www.motobecane.com/MBUSA6ht.html

to replace my previous commuter mountain bike, which had 11,000 miles on it. The one before that I gave to a friend with 15,000 miles on it. This is how I got to work every day (I went to work) for the last 8 years.

This is my 'you have a 100 year old house, do all your own work, and travel with 4 dogs so you need a truck' vehicle:

This is my 'NYC traffic is impossible, so go between it' vehicle, a Suzuki GSf1200S:

I've had lots of motorycles, you can see some of them here:

This is my ' if you bust your leg bicycle commuting, you still don;t have to take the subway' vehicle, an 81 Puch Moped:

Oh and this is the car of my youth. I still have it at my parent's house in upstate NY where I retired the car 10 years ago when they moved there. I bought in 1983 and used it all the time for about 10 years and became 'defined' by it in a sense because I was well known in NYC nightclubs at the time, and this was my ride. I wooed my wife in it as well.

Vorsprung durch Technik! smile

A 1998 Audi A3 in black - definitely a boy's toy. Looks very similar to this one . I had sell a large part of my soul for it, aber es ist solch ein kühles Auto!

Toyota Tercel bought used when I was a student. Thinking at the time was to change car when I get my PhD. or when the car stops working. I ended up not enrolling myself into any PhD. program and the car still works, so I keep it. A no-frill, extremely reliable car!

I think the Element looks like a rolling phone booth.

My wife's care is a 1990 Ford Festiva that she bought about 5 or 6 years ago for $1200. It's still running great and she puts a LOT of miles on it. She commutes over 100 miles a day, several days a week.

My car is a 1997 Ford Escort station wagon that we bought for $4700 a year ago after the crappy gas guzzling 2-door Blazer that we did have got smashed in by a monster Explorer. The SUV didn't fair too well in the collision either.

I believe in buying used and paying cash. Just the thought of a car payment sends shivers down my spine.

After the accident I learned the value of full insurance coverage. I used to only carry liability (because my cars weren't worth a whole lot anyway), but I found out that my insurance company wouldn't lift a finger to deal with the other (at fault) driver's insurance company unless I had comprehensive coverage. Needless to say I increased my coverage after that. It didn't add very much to the premiums either.
