Greetings!

Kenny asked where we spend our online time when we're not practicing wink or visiting this forum. I will cop to poker shocked . But when I have an important question to ask, it is always back to the brightest, and the best, the people of this forum. Succinctly put, my sister has a birthday ending in a "0" coming up, and she is refusing to celebrate it. Or, at least that's what she's saying. The reality is that if her birthday goes by without notice, she'll be hurt. So tonight she agreed to some sort of celebration on groundhogs' day. Problem is, that even with my myriad calendars, I'm not able to figure out the date of groundhogs' day. Does anyone know when it is? Please tellme that it is somewhere near her b'day (Feb. 17th).

Cheers!

Lucy,

If you truly want to show your sister how much you care, (when only the best will do!) see your local travel agent and buy her an all expense paid trip to see Puxatawny Phil check for his shadow on groundhog day! Now who else would be so thoughtful?

I think you really need to carry the whole Groundhog Day thing totally out of proportion to its actual importance, so that everyone in on it can go completely over the top with groundhog-related gifts, activities, food (no, I'm not suggesting serving roast groundhog!), decorations and maybe even a costumed, out-of-work actor (aren't there a few of those in NY?) dressed as a groundhog.

It will certainly obscure any obvious signs that this is really a birthday party for your x0-year-old sister. Just make sure everyone else is in on the joke. I vote for a totally silly party!

Perhaps all the guests can come wearing black, as the shadow. It would seem that since this morning's temp was 3 that Phil will not be coming out anytime soon!!

I sure hope that Rich is keeping the snow dance under wraps as well!!!!

I don't know what groundhogs taste like, but on the off chance that they taste like Spam, I will pass an idea on to you.

I once went to a party where everyone had to bring a dish made from Spam. We had Rack of Spam, Leg of Spam, Green Eggs and Spam, Spamburger Helper, Spamish Rice and a bunch of other dishes I can't remember. I got to be the judge of the cook-off contest, and I don't think I will ever be able to eat Spam again.

Might be a way to get your sister's mind off of her birthday....

Nope, don't know when groundhog's day is (although I'm sure Google does wink ) but I do know that "Groundhog Day" (Bill Murray?) was a GREAT movie. So I suggest:
1) Champagne
2) BIG box of chocolates
3) rent the movie

Groundhog Day is February 2nd.

I sure hope the little guy decides winter is over. We sure could use it here. Two years ago, we set the highest level of snowfall in one winter in our area in recorded history - over 600 cm's (20 feet for you guys south of the border). We are currently at a pace that exceeds that amount for the current calender date. By January 17/01, we had 250 cm's of snow recorded as having fallen. This year to date we have had up to 237 cm as of the 17th, and we've had two blizzards since then (one Friday, and another yesterday) which each dumped another 30 cm's (that's about a foot). So we could use a bit of help from that little critter.

Speaking of which, the teacher was testing the class on their knowledge of significant holidays. She was asking the class what Easter was about. The first little guy answered it's when you go out dressed up all spooky like and then go door to door asking for treats.

"That's Halloween" answered the teacher.

The next little girl said it's when my daddy dresses up in green, drinks green beer and talks about some guy Paddy who drove all the snakes out of Ireland.

"That too, is not correct" said the teacher "That's St. Patricks Day."

The third child she asked answered, "Well it's when the Easter bunny comes, and we all go into the back yard looking for chocolate eggs."

"Yes," said the teacher "but there's something else significant about that day."

"I know!" shouts one little boy at the back of the room.

"Yes, go ahead."

"it's when Jesus was raised from the dead.."

"Good for you." exclaimed the teacher.

"Yeah, and when he emerged from the tomb.." continued the little boy excitedly "..he saw his shadow, and went back in for six more weeks!"

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I tried to respond earlier, but I was unable to log on.

And the winner is . . . a book: Savage Beauty, Nancy Milford's biography of Edna St. Vincent Millay. If I can purchase a copy of Ground Hog's Day, I'm going to send her that, too (thanks, Jodi smile ). A party would be nice, but my sister lives across the continent from me (in the Bay area), and she sounds so deadly serious about not wanting any notice made of her birthday that I'm not going to chance flying out.
