Any suggestions?

Probably the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan. I saw that in the theater so I'm not familiar with the DVD encoding, but some of the best surround sound experience is from war movies I've rented. I like the rear speakers fairly close.

Oh, and hearing a door close right behind you in a quiet scene is freaky! laugh

Gryphon, another DVD question... because of the layout of my room I bought 5 speakers plus the subwoofer, rather than 7 for the 7.1 the receiver supports. I hooked speakers 4/5 to the "rear speaker" outputs on the receiver, is that the right way to do it? Nothing is explained in the owners manual about this.

Thanks,
Derick

I don't know anything about 7.1. I gather the two extra speakers are side channels that are to be placed in line with the listener. Can you select between 5.1 and 7.1 on the controls? In the old days if you cranked up an amp without a load attached you know what happened! (Maybe modern electronics have some type of crowbar protection or something).

In any event, you want rear speakers, yes. I don't think there are any 7.1 encoded movies yet. My understanding is that your receiver has to create the two new channels from the other four (two front/two rear).

I think I posted before about the first time I saw Saving Private Ryan in the theater. As I wanted to immerse myself in the experience, I sat smack in the middle of the theater. After just about two minutes of handheld camera work, I had to close my eyes or I was going to barf. (Nowadays I always sit as far back as possible, and at the slightest nausea look to the side at a stationary object). The sound was incredible, with bullets, impacts and explosions all around.

I wanted to get some taste of war, having never served in any capacity. The part where the soldier can't make himself go up the stairs out of fear was something with which I easily could identify.

BTW, Gryphon I have much respect for your son. Add me to those that say thanks for his committment and courage. I add my prayers for his safe return and that things will get better in Iraq after the elections.
