I beg to disagree.

I would wager a week's salary that dollar per dollar, billions more have been bilked by corporate moguls than by lawyers, and of those dollars bilked by corporate moguls, much of it has gone undetected.
Thanks in large part to the lawyers who advise and defend them.

Quote
Would you like to hear some stories of securities sales people who have bilked their clients - from my own personal experience? I've got some doozies. Or how about seniors who have been defrauded by insurance sales people. I've got dozens of those I could share.
Got plenty of stories of my own. Guess what? The lawyers in these stories don't look so good.

Quote
Lawyers are so despised not because they are any more dishonest than anyone else, but because most people who have needed a lawyer have been in an awful, very likely no-win situation, *and* because they've had to pay the lawyer a lot for the lawyer's help.
So very true. But this is only part of the reason.

Quote
I bet as a society, we'd be complaining a whole lot more about doctors if we paid out of pocket for their services rather than expecting our insurance to pay.
No doubt. But this has nothing to do with the unethical practices of the legal profession.

Quote
The funny thing is - there is no shortage of bright, young college grads beating the admission doors down at the country's better law schools. I wonder why.
I know why. The reasons are not inspiring.

Sorry kathyk... I have no doubt about your scruples. But I think you're in denial about many of your colleagues who use their knowledge of the system to take advantage of laypeople. As you say, it happens in every profession. But you should really ask yourself why so many despise the legal profession in particular.

I've tried to answer that Kent. It's all here. I can't do any better and I'm done with it. If nothing else, I hope I've made the point that bashing a profession or any group with which one identifies can be very hurtful.

That I do understand. I never meant to hurt you, or tar you with a brush you didn't deserve.

I'm not a lawyer, but went to law school after engineering. I became very disillusioned with the legal profession, so that is the source of my bias as a lapsed acolyte. Perhaps if I had known more lawyers like you, my opinion would be different.

Thanks Kent. Now I have to ask, (being a Michigander) where'd you go to law school?

Engineering: University of Alberta, then transferred to University of Toronto

Law: Fair Harvard, with a scholarship year at U. of Chicago in NAFTA and International Trade (yes, the professional student path).

But then I got distracted by my buds all becoming dot.com billionaires (ah, glorious, heady days!), and one thing led to another...

So the education was all for naught laugh ... (actually, that's not true. But I certainly didn't end up at my original destination!)

Impressive! I was imagining Wayne State, U of D or some other humdrum midwest school.

Sounds like the makings of a patent attorney. That's an area of law that's always intrigued me, but not having the engineering background, it was not in my stars.

Mamma, do try to keep up.

There is nobody in this thread that has not disclosed their educational level. Actual profession...yes, I'm guilty of that. But if you are what you say you are, pay attention to what I write, and you'll figure it out fairly quickly...
Jolly, having been in the "hospital business" myself for 23 years & having read many of your interesting & informative posts, I am fairly certain I know (about) what you do at the Veterans hospital you work in in Louisiana.

I also know that despite the large amt of knowledge about hospital workings, other depts & HCFA regs etc you've garnered over your years at the VA Hospital-your actual job position & title wouldn't sound impressive to many that post here, especially those who's occupations have been denigrated.. . Hence the quip about "mopping floors" knowing full well that many will make the erroneous leap that the real position is at the opposite spectrum. . ..
All positions are necessary & important in a hospital.

Yes Jolly, I can keep up most of the time. I'm also exactly who I say I am. Clearly.

Regards.
You know, I actually typed out part of my Curriculum Vitae, but then I thought...nah.

Let me know if you need a job sometime. Maybe I'll hire you.

Oh my goodness.

BTW kathy, you replied to me a while back, citing the hundreds of lawyers you've rubbed elbows with, far more than I. You're obviously correct on that count. And I suppose I have to admit that my "nine-to-one" ratio in one of my earliest posts in this thread was an exaggeration. I assumed that that was obvious, but I should have known better.

But let's say the exact opposite were the case - one bad apple to nine good ones. Even at that proportion, the profession would have a significant problem to deal with. And while I won't make the mistake twice of using actual numbers, I think that's a somewhat generous ratio.

So please answer these questions. You don't even have to reply publicly, just answer them in your own head: Does your profession have any systemic problems whatsoever that need to be fixed? Are people's various negative experiences simply anecdotal examples of occurrences that are so rare as to be statistically insignificant? Is there any "there" there at all to these experiences? Is the admittedly substantial dislike for lawyers in general at all grounded on justifiable gripes, or is it all just a big whine on the part of a bunch of people who are envious?

And my last post to this thread (I promise): if people think that I have a negative obsession with lawyers -n if I really hate them so much - why have I, for all this time, used one as my freakin' avatar?

Geez, Dwain. I would think you'd know me well enough by now to recognize that my comments about Wayne State and U of D were tongue in cheek. I graduated from Moo U for gosh sakes.

Sorry. No more anwers to lawyer questions - unless of course you pay me a hefty retainer up front.

I'm sorry I find that doubtful. You've been posting here for years & have always refused to answer. Yes, you enjoy sharing some of the interesting things you've learned about hospital workings over the years but you're not proud of what you actually do there otherwise 'twouldn't be such a secret. ...

laugh I've posted many of the positions I've held & some of my credentials. Having held most of them in the hospital setting over the last 23 years I'm pretty certain I know what you do at the Veteran's hospital. While theres nothing wrong with what you do there & I do believe you supervise some employees, you're not in a position to hire someone like me . ..

Sure do. Nothing wrong with it either. My mother was a school custodian. All jobs are important. However I wouldn't feel the need to maintain a facade about it though. .... Nor would I go around slamming attorney's &/or other professionals while clearly not being happy with what I've achieved, to the point of hiding what I actually do. ...

Too much said by both of us. Actually I usually enjoy many of your posts in general. I'm done. Back to your regularly scheduled program.

Heck, you can frame it if you'd like.

See, the problem with nurses....

They are so proud when they first graduate from nursing school. They wear their nursing caps with pride.

And then, one fateful day, they get caught out in the rain, wearing the symbol of their profession. The rain leaches out the starch, which then reaches the brain through an osmotic process.

This causes a condition by which logical thought is not possible. It was first identified sometime before WWII, in a nurse named Mabelle Schiffer, who worked at Cook County Hospital. As is the custom in the medical sciences, the disease, and those afflicted with it, henceforth carries her name.

"Schiffer Brains". laugh laugh laugh laugh
