Hi everybody there,

I wanted to ask for the expert opinion of the members here. I am just about to buy a digital piano of the Yamaha series. I decided to get a CVP, because, although I will play mainly piano, I would like to have some sound/sequencer possibilities to play/create midis (but auto-accompaniment does not play a role in my case).

After trying and trying a lot of models during months, I decided the CVP-305/7 (I tried them, and I was amazed!), but jet the new CVP-405 just recently appeared in the mark. Now I can get any of them (CVP-405 or CVP-307) for the same very good price. I have only to decide between the CVP-307 and CVP-405. Being just a beginner/intermediate player, what would you recommend me?

The differences I found between the two models are

Towards the CVP-307:

1.- Display screen twice so big as the lower models
2.- iAFC technology
3.- 128+128 polyphony
4.- Amplification system (60Wx2 + 20x2)

Regarding the advantages of the CVP-405 over the CVP-307

1.- 4x AWA sampling
2.- USB recording capability.
3.- New rhythms and sounds (e.g. articulation voices).
4.- Modern technology.

Would anybody give me her/his opinion? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance.

Either one is a whopper in price and far exceed the needs of a beginner. I'd go for the newer tech so that when you quit playing a year from now one of us gets a super nice piano for cheap laugh wink thumb

Just kidding. But if the new tech isn't much more $$$, it makes sense to get the newest one you can and it would be better in terms of resale value should you change/trade in/up in the future. USB recording is a nice feature.

I came into this world with nothing, and I still have most of it left.

Hi OnTheWeb,

thank you very much for your comment. I don't think I will resale in a long time, I have been playing quite a long time till now. smile

I agree with you,the USB recording is the only feature I would like to have on the CVP-307. I am still not sure which model to choose, I do not think the technology of the CVP-307 is that bad.

Regards

The 405's 128 polyphony should be more than enough for piano. Figure two units of polyphony for each piano note - because they're stereo - plus another two for using the damper pedal. Unless you keep the pedal depressed for more than one measure at a time, you shouldn't run out of polyphony.

The fourth layer of samples should produce a more realistic piano sound.

I've seen the 405 pictured on the web with two different cabinet styles - one similar to a 305 and another the same as the 307. If appearance is important, you may want to confirm which is the actual styling.

No matter which one you choose, a set of studio-quality headphones, such as Sennheiser's HD 580's or the newer 600's, will let you hear the true quality of the included sounds. The Clavs' speaker are not big enough to accurately render the lower notes. 'Phones are also good for silent practice.

Those accompaniments may be enjoyable to try, if you play jazz, rock, or pop.

Thanks FogVilleLad,

The CVP 405 cabinet is the same as the CVP-307. Polyphony won't be a problem in any of those wonderful instruments. I was more inclined towards the CVP-307 because of the iAFC and the big screen. However, this "issue" with the old technology is disturbing me much.

The headphones is definitely a "muss" (my wife would surely support the idea). I will have a look to the Sennheiser's HD.

And yes, I will use the CVP-whatever to learn finally jazz!!! laugh

PS: Your site has a very nice design, update it!

Nin,

Thanks for the kind words re my site. Memory says that I used Microsoft templates to put it together. Unfortunately I let my hosting account expire and haven't really re-entered the text. The download links at the bottom do function;-)

The info I've seen for the 405 is not as complete as it is for the 300 series. The 405 has the same mini-grand shape as does the 307, and that instrument's specs do include iAFC. Is there a tech support number for Yammy in Germany?

Senns are outstanding 'phones and the 580's are less expensive, if you can find them. I own/have owned both. There's little difference between them. Senns' 'phones can sound a little flat, right out of the box. If you set a CD or MP3 player to a comfortable playback volume and plug in the 'phones, the sound will bloom after c.1 hour.

I think I would wait and make a decision after more definite specifications are available for the CVP-400 series.

I found a link to a brochure at www.cvpug.com. The CVP Users Group site is a good source of information on Yamaha Clavinovas.

I'm afraid the 405 does not have iAFC. Have a look at the pdf.
