Hey all,

I am in the process of helping my fiancee empty out her grandmothers house. She has a baby grand piano that is of unknown year and make. We are needing to try and find the serial numbers, but can not find them anywhere. Here is the information that I know:
The piano was purchased from another family member in the late 40's or early 50's. It is 70 inches x 70 inches with a dark Mahogany finish. The legs appear to be carved with some nice detail work on them. It also had the keys/keyboard replaced sometime in the 60's.

Any information that could be provided to find a serial number or to try and get an approx date of the piano would be helpful.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff, I wonder if posting a picture might help some of the gurus around here. Did you happen to look at the harp inside the piano. Sometimes there will be a manufacturer's name on that big piece of metal that lies over the sound board.

Or on the soundboard itself.

I failed to mention that in the first post. On the metal structure inside the piano it has W. W. Kimball on it. There are no other numbers on that piece that we could find. Sorry I left that bit of important info off.

Thanks,
Jeff

Well then it is likely a Kimball piano from Indiana. Could be pretty old!

Here's a link to where on the plate you might look.

I think that Kimball was still in Chicago back then.

You might look for a number stamped or printed on the back of the keybed or bellyrail up toward the treble end. You will have to get down under the piano to see this. And you will probably need a flashlight. I don't know when they started the practice but this location was common with many Kimball grands.

You might also consider having a technician look at the piano. Most are familiar with the various places manufacturers hide these things. Sometimes it is necessary to remove the action and keyset to find a number.

My Fiance did find a set of numbers on it last night. I am not sure if these are the actual serial numbers though. She found them on the underside of the music stand part that slides off of the piano. The nubers were stamped on the wood. The numbers were 47 and then below it or a few spaces later 8114.

Could these be the actual numbers, if so, any idea of the age.

Thanks,
Jeff

if the number is 478114 then the piano may be made around 1942 to 1945

Kimball started serial numbers at 14000 in 1870 .. or so,

Del's idea is a good one. Do you know what and where the belly rail is...or
the key frame?
