I'm looking for a nice digital piano. Budget <1100 or 1200$US if you can convince me. The look isn't as important as the feel of the keys. Ultimately, I'm looking for a piano with a good feel that can play midis - I'm beginning to learn jazz and want to be able to have some custom rhythm/percussion accompaniment.

I went to a GC yesterday to look at their president's day sales. I liked the yamaha ypg635 - 719$ - thought it had a nice interface and liked its look. The only problem I had was with the volume. I couldn't tell if it was because there were tons of people in the store, but I had a hard time hearing stuff until I had the volume almost maxed out.

I tried out the YDP140 - 899$. I loved the feel of this one, but not a big fan of the interface. I don't like having to use actual piano keys to change instruments, rhythm, etc.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.

- Yamaha YDP140/YDP160
- Yamah P140
- Casio PX320/PX720

I think between those would be some of your best bets.

How do you think the CP33 stacks up CYph3r ? Also do you think anyone looking at a p140 right now should wait for the p-155?

I think the CP33 is comparable to the P140. Except the CP33 does NOT have any internal speakers.

And ah yeah, definately wait out for the P-155. Seems like it's going to be pretty expensive though. But even still, it should knock the P140 down in price by abit.

GC is offering the cp33 for about a $1000 right now. I am seriously considering this board.

sem25,

If you want a piano that can reproduce midi sequences while you play along, I don't think any of the models discussed here (P140/155, YDP 140/160) are ok. The Yamaha YPG635/DGX630 can do it (and has its own accompaniment feature), just as the Roland FP-4 (in your price range).

Thierry

Yes, and the screen display in the Yamaha makes it much much easier to use the accompaniment feature (selection and check status) than FP-4, where you have to rely on a small LED digits display and lights (you need to use a list to check which settings the numbers refer to).

I think I can sacrifice internal accompaniment for a better quality dp. From what's been said in the threads and general reviews, the YPG635's quality doesn't seem all too great. I've been reading up on the P-155 and looks like it'd be great for me.

Also read stuff/seen videos on the FP-4. I believe they had a FP-4 at GC, but didn't check it out.

Anyone care to throw in their two cents on the P-155 vs the FP-4? I know it's rather difficult to judge on a piano that's not even out yet, but from the specs it sounds like it'd be worth waiting for.

Thanks.

Sem25,

It is not only about the Auto-accompaniment feature, it is about the capability to play the full set of GM midi sounds (either from a file on a computer/USB stick, or from a sequencer - think Band in a Box). I do not think the P1xx can do that.

Thierry
