I just purchased the Yamaha P120. Am I crazy or is it possible that it sounded a little bit better at the Guitar Center then it does in my tiny apartment? I placed it up against a window -is that wrong? With the Yamaha upright of my youth, the piano's placement in the room seemed to matter.

The speakers produce a smaller sound then I remember during my "test drive". Should I add better speakers? (It sounds pretty good with headphones) I checked out slightly less expensive Yamaha models, which sounded good to me, but they required amps. Is that why they sounded better? Clavinova, synthesizer or digital…what is the difference? I confess that I am ignorant but trying hard to learn. The last time I purchased a digital, I ended up with a Roland RD-?? which was a controller.

All I am looking for is something that sounds and feels like a real piano with a few fun features (I play mostly classical music). When I play without headphones…I’d like it to sound like a real piano, if possible.

Thanks for any input or comments!!! I'm brand new here and have already learned that I need to upgrade my headphones...aside from that, I'm pretty clueless...

Hey Charmaine,
External speakers will certainly make a noticable difference. As will quality headphones.
The design in of the P120 is such, that portability is the prime design consideration! The onboard speakers are (although not an afterthought) not designed to be a primary speaker system either. They are for home use certainly but not driven by a huge amount of power (12W X 2) if memory serves me correctly. The P120 is first and foremost a portable digital piano so keeping the size of amplifier and speaker built into the piano down was important during the design phase.
There are many types of speakers available for your piano but those need to be a full range system to get the best sound possible. As you said you live in a "tiny" apartment so don't worry about getting anything too powerful for speakers. Just something to reinforce the great full range sound already produced by the piano. And above all else, enjoy your new piano!
