I'm looking at the Behringer K900FX keyboard amplifier, as far as fidelity goes, what would be the best amp to get for this price range? I don't need a lot of power I just need to make sure I'm getting very good fidelity. I know a PA system is preferable but they're much more expensive and I need something to get started.

Thanks,

-Colin

Behringer has gotten a lot of negative press for their equipment. That said, I have a few Behringer products and they all seem very good value, and I've never had a reliability problem. I think around 5 years ago, Behringer was just setting up in Zhuhai (China) and they turned out some variable stuff.

See Youtube for Audio Technology's tour of the Behringer factory and a lot of commentary

I just bought the Logitech Z 2300 200watt Stereo Speakers w/subwoofer (refurbished) instead of a monitor speaker for my Korg SP250. I know I went against the usual advice for amplifying my Korg but wanted an inexpensive alternative. This was the advice I got from a keyboard expert on another forum.

Colin, you might take a look at them.

joan,

Just curious, what were the cables needed to hook up your keyboard to the logitechs? Did the speakers allow direct connection via stereo cables to your keyboard? (I thought they were designed primarily for computer use via miniplugs...)

Sid,
I just ordered my Logitech's and they have not arrived yet. However, I know they will connect to my Korg's audio output (OUTPUT L/MONO,R)using an adaptor I got at Radio Shack. (Y-Adapter Cable)1/8" to 1/4". It takes the 1/8" end from the speakers and splits into two 1/4" plugs that fit in the back of my Korg. I have to wait until they arrive to determine what actually happens with the audio output, but I know they will work beautifully with my digital.

An advisor on another forum helped me decide that they would be the best possible solution at the absolute cheapest price. I got mine reconditioned on Ebay for $100 including shipping.

He said that these higher powered Logitech's "give added headroom when turned down to the lower levels...handle audio transients (Peaks) and will have CLEARER transparent sound...emulates the sound of a REAL PIANO vs. a little piano in a box.."

Hey Colin...for what it's worth...

If you not going to be "gigging" with this amp-speaker system....why not go w/ some entry level powered-active studio monitors and an inexpensive mixer.

This will give you a far superior sound than any keyboard amp. Mackie, JBL, Tannoy.....there are so many manufacturers I couldn't begin to name them all.

I'm not sure of your budget , but I would go that route.

Good luck

DF

I second Dave's opinion. In the $100-200 range, a set of studio monitors is going to give you better quality sound, and no amp at that price is going to put out enough sound for serious gigging.

For performances, you need to get into the Roland KC350 or 550 world. I also like Motion Sound and Hartke. The last big gig I did (pit orchestra for a Sondheim musical) I used a Roland KC550 and it worked very well. They didn't even have to run me through the house sound system. laugh
