Hi all once again! In rd700sx user's guide, there was mention of adjusting string and sympathetic resonance. I'm intrigued by the possible technology behind this feature.

1. Does the RD700sx's tone processor generate these unique sounds in realtime through complex piano acoustic modelling algorithm programmed in the digital piano or;

2. These are just merely recorded samples superimposed onto the original waveform when the key gets struck.

Thanks!

I'm about 90% sure that this is created using sampling technology as well as digital effects like reverb. Remember, although acoustic modelling is the newest technology on the block, it's not necessarily the best. I've heard modeled sounds that are great, and some that are just horrible. The same is true for sampling technology. The bottom line: does it SOUND good to you?

I'm not all that sure the resonance adds much to the experience, unless you're playing music that specifically calls for it, and even then the experience isn't all that convincing. Sympathetic resonance, when heightened, led to a synthetic "chorusy" effect. At moderate to low levels, I couldn't even detect a difference in sound. String resonance was even less noticeable, if at all, during the playing of standard repertoire. However, it could make the difference to a serious pianist needing off-hours headphone practicing of contemporary repertoire requiring that specific feature.

I'm waiting for Roland to put out a keyboard that simulates playing inside the piano, or preparing it. Or has someone already sampled prepared pianos?

This is an interesting 'full circle' sort of thing. Prepared pianos were initally developed to simulate a percussion ensemble at a pianists fingertips. We, of course, have that with a digital piano with the percussion kits. But now here's a request that the digital piano simulate an acoustic piano simulating a percussion ensemble acoustically. smile The irony.

I was born the year Glenn Gould stop playing concerts. Coincidence?

You gotta love irony.

I guess this is not unlike all the current digital sampling technology being used to emulate the analog synths of a bygone era. I go to all this trouble to get the most realistic sounding samples of acoustic instruments, and all my friends want to hear are vintage Moogs.
