whats the scenerio with the Yamaha P series and the Roland RD series keyboards. Are they all 1/4 jacks unblalanced (TS) connections or balanced (TRS) connections.
i am always confused with most of the keyboards and these keyboards aren't cheap so wondering whether they are balanced connections. The manual stating they are jacks doesn't really say whether it is balanced or unbalanced.

I can only speak for the Roland RD700SX: it has balanced XLR outs as well as unbalanced 1/4 inch outs.

Re: the p-90 (and I apologize for being fairly ignorant about electronics), there are two 1/4" outputs - L/L+R and R. I can't determine the purpose of these, unless it's just a way to send the top of the keybd to an additional amp or channel. Regardless of how I use these outputs I don't hear a difference in sound. Also, I have been trying to play the bass in one amp and the piano in another amp(split keybd)so that I'd have separate tone and volume controls. Yamaha says it's not possible. That just doesn't seem right. Any thoughts?

I'm reading this thread and have an RD700sx (recommended by pianomad... a thousand thanks I LOVE IT!!!!) and I am just curious as to what exactly the benefits of balanced XLR is as someday I hope to learn all the features of this wonderful instrument. Right now, I'm only using the pedal 1/4 inch plugs for my pedal and footswitch and the monitor 1/4 jacks. Beth

Shammy,
Balanced connectors are better when the cable lengths are long, which is why they're preferred in recording studios.
For typical at-home setups, unbalanced is just fine.
