hello everyone! this looks like a great forum!

i'm interested in a MIDI keyboard to connect to my mac G4. i plan on using it with apple's garage band, band-in-a-box, and for investigating the various instructional and play along features on the www.

i've seen a number of favorable comments on the M audio 61. however, for not much more money it seems as though keyboards such as the yamaha PSR293/PSR450/DGX305 could be used. the yamahas of course have "stand alone" ability and some other features lacking on the M audio.

so, my question is, what is the DISadvantage if any of choosing one of the yamahas? any other keyboards i should be considering? i'm interested in maximizing bang for the buck and versatility up to a price point of maybe $300-400.

thanks very much for any help!

I can tell you that M-Audio's Radium 61 (own one of those) has the advantage and ability to assign to its knobs, wheels and sliders any MIDI CC# you want, but it doesn't have a memory bank for this. I don't know about Yamaha's PSR keyboards having this advantage (so if they have them, I'll shut my mouth), but if you are gonna be playing with GarageBand or synths/sequencers like Reason, assignable controllers and modulators is where it's at wink

I tend to agree with DuCamp's comment. Being a dedicated controller, the M-Audio has a more open type of design. The Yammy PSR's espeically in the lower range probably do not have assignable controls or at least I doubt it very much.

My 2 cents

thanks for the information. assignable controls is a feature that i was not aware of. i'll have to weigh that advantage against the ability of a yamaha/casio (got a favorable recommendation for a casio mk3000 over the weekend) to operate as a stand alone.

thanks again!

I have the Yam DGX 305 connected to an old laptop running BIAB and other sequencing programs. I like it a lot. I suggest you get one from Guitar Center and try it our for 30 days.
