I am trying to find information on the Yamaha CLP 511 electric/digital piano from 1996. We are looking to purchase a beginner electric piano for our kids and one is listed on Craigslist for $600. It is in immaculate condition and rarely used, original owner. Is this a fair price? Good model? What was the original price for this piano? Thank you for posting any information you can share.

We have a CLP-511, it's a decent digital. It was the middle of the line (411 below and 611 above). I can't remember exactly, but I think it retailed for about $3000 back in the day, but that's pretty much irrelevant to any pricing now.

Before we purchased our new digital, we considered selling our 511, we decided that the amount we'd get for it wouldn't be worth the time and effort and we just might as well keep it. I would not consider $600 a good value as you can get a new Casio for around the same price.

Our daughter started on our 511, and while it was nice (since we already had it), she pretty quickly advanced to the point that it was becoming an issue. For the right price, I'd say that it would be a reasonable purchase for kids who are just starting, just be prepared to upgrade (to an acoustic or a better digital) in the not too distant future.

I would not consider a 13-year-old DP until I first scouted out the new offerings. You get a lot more for the money today.

Errrr. Thank you for your posts. Sadly, in the interim, my dh purchased the 511. Hopefully we can get a few years use out of it so as not too shed too many tears over the purchase. I wish I knew more about pianos. We were in a rush to buy one since the kids started piano lessons. It took me awhile to find this forum and I couldn't find any free information online. I plan to lurk around here for awhile and hopefully learn from all of the experts on this site. Thank you again everyone. If anyone else has anything to add, please chime in.

Don't fret too much, like I mentioned, we still use our 511 so it's not nearly as bad as say purchasing an old acoustic upright and finding out that it's completely unplayable. We preferred it over the newer Casio PX310 we had (we sold the Casio and kept the 511), so newer doesn't always mean better.

If your kids piano playing takes off, then the amount that you spent will seem like nothing and in the end would have been an excellent investment.

My only warning is, like I mentioned previously, you probably want to start educating yourself now on higher end digitals and/or other acoustics. While the 511 is far better than some mushy junk keyboard from Target, it still is relatively old technology that, if your kids stick with it, they will likely outgrow in pretty short order (say six months to two years). If you're anything like us, you'll start with the 511 and who knows what you'll end up with.

My kids started at about the same ages as yours and probably the thing that helps us the most is that we make practicing the piano as much a "normal" part of our daily routine as homework and brushing teeth. Doesn't always make it the thing they want to do, but it does help provide a good baseline and a good mindset going forward.

So congrats on the piano, keep encouraging the little ones.

bitWrangler, leave it to a Texan to make me feel better about our purchase. Obviously we could have found something better. Hindsight is always 20/20. Thank you for not making me feel too terrible and finding some positives in our purchase. We'll see how it works out for the time being. I'm sure this board will be a priceless resource in educating me. Thank you again! Texans are the best!
