HI, I'm new to this forum. I'm wanting to buy a yamaha clp-170 piano, but the price a salesman gave me seems high. He gave me a price of 4100 dollars. I live in memphis, Tn and I'm wanting to know want they may sell for in your areas. If this price is high, is it possible to get the price down. What are my alternatives?

thanks very much

A number of people have reported good success at buying from Canada. One of the dealers most frequently mentioned as being good to do business with is Keyboard Centre in Toronto, http://www.keyboard.on.ca/, 905-639-4465. They'll give you a price over the phone, delivered to your home including all customs duty and shipping. The warranty is good in the US.

There's also a European dealer called PianoDepot, www.pianodepot.com. They're quoting $2650.56 plus shipping and duty. You can at least use this as a starting point with your local dealer. Buying from Europe means the warranty isn't honored in the U.S. and you need a power converter (inexpensive) but again, a number of people have gone this way and been satisfied. You can ask about this at the Clavinova user group, www. cvpug.com

I wound up buying my Clavinova locally even though I paid a little more because I wanted to support the dealer who took time with me. However, having other price points was very useful in negotiating with him.

I live in Ottawa and the price I was quoted (Canadian dollars) was $5,000. Considering I am ready to purchase the instrument I suppose I should work on getting the salesman to lower it a bit, heh.

I have read some users reviews on harmony-centrals web page that they paid $2800 and $3100 in US dollars for their clp-170's, but it doesn't say where they bought them. One user says he paid 3500 in canadian dolars for his clp-170.

Chicago Area
I received quotes in the Chicago area of $3195 for the faux wood finished and $3995 for the Polished Ebony (which is gorgeous) version. Two separate Yamaha dealers quoted those prices, and were referring to a spec sheet that looked similar.

Prices in New Orleans are about $3,300 for the Mahogany or Cherry version. Probably about $200 less for the (ugly) "rosewood". Add $500 for "polished ebony" which is identified in Europe as black polyester.

Note that Yamaha forbids one dealer from selling in another's territory in the U.S., so you may have a problem if you locate a more reasonable dealer in a nearby town. I haven't tried the Canadian dealer, but I'd probably do that before getting a European one. They run on 220v and require a step-down transformer. Not expensive, but it would worry me.
