I posted this on another forum, but I am curious what you have to say.

I bought a Yamaha CVP-303 in March this year. I noticed the built-in speakers produce a soft, hissing noise. The level stays the same whether the volume is set to 0 or max. There is no noise at all when using headphones. The noise can easily be heard when you're sitting behind the piano, so you don't have to press your ears to the speaker to hear it.

I asked other CVP owners and they all replied they hear absolutely no noise. I contacted Yamaha Nederland who forwarded me to the three repair companies in Nederland. I e-mailed two of them and they both replied a little noise is normal. Finally, about 3/4 year, my dealer came and listened: he says Yamaha's should not make this noise. So then I had a tech from the third Yamaha repair company come over last Tuesday. He thinks it's normal, but he'll listen to another 303 to be sure and will get back to me. I didn't hear anything from him yet, despite his promise to get in touch with me this week.

So what do you say? Is it normal an expensive instrument produces more noise than a cheap junk radio? Anyone had the same experience? Do your speakers produce audible noise?

Regards, Eric

My CP300 makes no noise. I think yours is faulty.

CVP-307 here ... Tiny amount of hiss on mine, audible only with ears right next to speakers.

My CLP230 makes a little noise if I keep the sustain pedal down too long but I think all models do that.

Thanks for the replies, more would still be very welcome. My CVP makes the noise all the time. You just have to switch it on and there it is, without touching another key, pedal, knob or switch.

BTW: I got a message from the tech, after asking him by e-mail: he had an ear infection and could only listen to a CVP-301, which, according to him, made the same noise. I sent an e-mail to my dealer last Saturday: no reaction yet, I'll call him tomorrow.

I remember that I told the tech that I listened to a CLP-230 or 240 in the music store and didn't hear any noise at all. According to him that doesn't mean that a CVP also makes no noise.

This sounds like b...s... to me: if you compare the specifications of the speakers and amplifier of the CVP-303 and CLP-240 you'll find they are equal. I can't imagine Yamaha would design each instrument from scratch without reusing components in several types. And as said: no noise when using headphones. So most likely the amplifier would be causing the noise.

Keep at them. You've paid good money and you are entitled to a good product.

I think Yamaha should fix it.

While you're waiting I'd make sure to try all the various adjustments you can to see if you can change the noise or make it go away.

Have you tried playing with the equalizer? Or maybe plugging in a microphone or unplugging a microphone if one is already there.

I'm not familiar with the Yamaha CVP-303, can you do something like turn off the LCD screen to see if that makes a difference?

Just got an e-mail from the tech: he said another CVP-303 makes the same noise, so according to him there's no problem. I'll get in touch with my dealer today, because I bought it from him and he should solve the problem.

Copper, I can adjust whatever I want, that doesn't help. The microphone connection is switched off. It seems to me the amplifier causes the noise in the end of the circuit, so after the sound-, equalizer and other modules.

Did you check for obvious areas of possible interference...ie other equipment, proper grounding etc?
