Hi,

I'm buying a digital piano soon and I've decided for the Yamaha clavinova CLP line.

Still, I cannot decide between the CLP 230 and the CLP 240. I'd like to hear user's experiences to help me make my decision. Price difference between the two is about $ 300,- / € 350,-.

go for CLP240 which's worth that $300!

they both have the same action so that the only major thing left to compare is the sound. you want better sound from a digital, right? 240 has 3-leve dynamic sound sampleing and 230 has only 1-level, so which one sounds better? is it worth it with $300 extra? i would think so, and that's what i would choose in your case.

From a technical standpoint, the differences:

230 = AWM Stereo Sampling
240 = AWM Dynamic Stereo Sampling

230 = 1 Dynamic Step
240 = 3 Dynamic Steps
(I swear they're repeating the same point, but they list it as two separate things in the brochure, so...)

230 = No Stereo Sustain, or Key-Off samples
240 = Stereo Sustain + Key-Off samples
Reason #1 I went with the 240 over the 230. smile

230 = 14 Voices
240 = 14 Voices x 2 Variations

230 = 20W Speakers (x2)
240 = 40W Speakers (x2)
Reason #2 I went with the 240.

230 = No music clips
240 = Music Clips

230 = No Dynamic Damper Effect
240 = Dynamic Damper Effect
(Again, I think they're rehashing the same feature in a different way.)

230 = USB to Host
240 = USB to Host + USB to Device

But what exactly is this? English is not my mother tongue, and I think this is a technical phrase anyway... do you think you can explain?

Yes, this one is in the brochure. I don't really care about the voices.

This one I also read about. I have to decide whether 20 Watt is enough for me. Difficult, as the piano in a showroom sounds different than in my (not too big) living room...

Eh? Ok... like samples you mean? As in keyboards?

What does this last thing give me?

Thanks for replying. Glad to hear from a user! laugh

On the subject of:

230 = 1 Dynamic Step
240 = 3 Dynamic Steps

230 = No Stereo Sustain, or Key-Off samples
240 = Stereo Sustain + Key-Off samples

Here is answer from Yamaha's website:

  • Key-off samples recreate the characteristic sound that occurs when a key is released and the dampers fall back onto the strings.
  • Stereo Sustain samples recreate the unique resonance of the strings and the soundboard of a real grand piano when the damper pedal is pressed.
  • Advanced Wave Memory II is an exclusive, patented system that captures the overall harmonic range of the sound of an instrument.
  • Advanced Wave MemoryII, coupled with entirely new Dynamic samples taken from a specially selected Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano, give the Clavinova the changes of timbre throughout all dynamic ranges.

Music Clips are the little metal things that pop up to hold your book or sheets in place. I usually end up breaking the spines on my books so that they'll lay flat, so the clips are useless to me.

USB to Host VS USB to Device -
If I have it correct, the USB to Device port allows you to save files directly to a flash drive. A USB to Host port connects to your computer to use the Clavinova with the appropriate software.

I don't have my 240 home as of yet, but I did get a call from the dealer announcing it arrived yesterday. laugh
