Can somebody recommend a professional digital piano (just awesome piano sounds and great action without bells and whistles). No drums, arrangers and so on..., like Yamaha P-120 just better piano sounds. I don't mind to have a few other voices but I don't want to pay a hundreds of dollars more for the things I don't need. I'm looking for pro stage piano and not for furniture.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kawai MP8 is a stage piano with the same wooden action found in its popular CA series.

While I personally prefer Yamaha pianos, I think Roland pianos deserve a look. Given your requirements, I would look at the following:
- Yamaha P-250
- Roland RD-300SX
- Roland RD-700SX
You can access the manuals for each of these at the respective manufacturer's website.

A couple of things about the P-250:
- With internal speakers, it's relatively heavy at about 70 lbs.
- It was introduced in 2002, and I believe it's due for a refresh.

Good luck in your search!

Yamaha CLP270/280 should be in this category as well. but if only for stage piano, P250 would be one choice.

Thank you guys for your replies. From all of these models Roland RD-700SX looks most appealing. But before I go to the store to compare the difference in piano sounds between Yamaha P-120 and Roland RD-700SX can somebody tell me if it's a really big improvement in a piano sound quality???

I tried them both. I was very disappointed with the feel and sound of the P-120. Almost bought the RD700SX but ended up getting the CLP280.

Take a good set of headphones and make up your own mind.

Well, there's a subjective answer, and a factual answer.

The factual answer is that the RD700SX and P120 are in two different price points and that the RD700SX has samples that are higher resolution and superior sonically. Whether you like them better than the P120 is the subjective part. Yamaha and Roland have different signature sounds. Yamaha tends to be brighter, while Roland tends to be warmer. I prefer the more "hi fi" sounds of the RD700SX over the P120, but if you like bright pianos, you may actually prefer the P120. A better comparison would be the RD700SX and the P250, which are more closely priced.

Thanks Steve for the info. The reason I compared these 2 models 'coz I have P-120. So I don't want to spend 1,000 of dollars more for something that is not much better.

Probably a more appropriate comparison would be the RD700SX to the Yamaha new S90ES, both of which have very nice piano sounds, and both of which have different takes on a variety of other features. They're also both expandable via each company's expansion boards. The RD700SX and S90ES share many of the same types of features, are about the same size and weight (which is an important consideration if you're gigging without cartage), and are at about the same price point (the 700SX is slightly more expensive, I believe).

The P-250 is not such a good comparison to the 700SX. It is less of a "stage piano" in the sense of the RD700SX, and more of traditional digital piano with speakers that happens to be somewhat portable (although it is VERY heavy). A lot of notable piano player do use it as a stage piano though, but it's kind of an apples-to-oranges comparison with the 700SX.

The main appeal of the P-250 (and also what makes it big and heavy) is the internal speakers and built-in music rack, which make it more of a standalone instrument than the others, which would require some sort of amplification. if you play a lot of traditional unamplified sit-down acoustic or jazz combo or big band dates without a PA, this is a consideration. The P-250 packs plenty of power for these kind of gigs, whereas the P-120 does not. Actually, I think the main thing that makes the P-250 sound better than the 120 in terms of piano sound is those speakers, which sound much better (are are much louder) than the internal ones on the P-120. If you don't like the P-120's sound through other speakers or headphones, you're not going to find the P-250 a huge improvement.

The P-250 is also several years old, and having A/B'ed it with the S90ES, the P-250 piano sound is noticeably inferior, which means that the RD-700SX will also sound superior. I would expect an update from Yamaha soon, maybe even at the turn of the year (since the P-120 just got updated to the P-140).
