I'm 33 years old and I've been playing piano for three year.
I began playing with a poor piano (1 year) and then I bought a digitial piano (Roland RD 500, weighted keys).
I'd like to know if it worth buying an acoustic piano.
Thanks!

I have been using a Technics PR60 digital piano for 15 years now, bought by my father when I was 13, and used it through college, eight years of University, and more...mainly because it was cheaper, and easier to move it around all the time.

But!!!...I have just purchased a Bluthner upright 'acoustic' piano and am amazed at the comparison. The Bluthner wins hands down. (See my post 'Bluthner uprights' in the piano forum)

It is really up to you to decide, however. And it does depend on your objectives. I personally prefer the real thing, but then again I am taking it a bit more seriously now.

Cheers for now.

Actually you have one of the better Digitals
out there! Perhaps play sometimes a 'real'
piano and see if you notice the difference!
Depending on your playing level you may wish to 'upgrade' later when you really notice a difference!
By the way, how did you come up with the name
'German' if I may ask? Just curious! adios,
Norberto, el Aleman

Hi,

I'm a piano technician and have given this issue some thought. It all depends on your needs. If you're looking for good touch/responsiveness and sound, then you should buy an acoustic. If you're looking for something versatile that you can move around and not have to tune every time you do, then you should buy a digital.

Other considerations: A good acoustic piano will last at least 50 years if taken care of. Plan on replacing a digital piano about every 10 at least: they wear out faster and become obsolete almost as soon as you walk out the door. A digital piano's value decreases by about half every couple of years. An acoustic on the other hand, can be sold 5 to 10 years after buying it for only a few hundred less than you paid for it.

However, you can do a lot more with a digital. You can hook it up to a computer with sequencing software and do composition/recording very easily. They're also much easier to move. You can also tailor them to a hall a lot easier than an acoustic. Having a big hall necessitates a bigger piano if you're going acoustic. But if you're going digital, then all you have to do is get bigger amps, (or plug into the ones that are already there if they've got 'em).

I own a digital myself. I've become so addicted to the sound of an in-tune piano that I can't play anything else. And the last thing I want to do when I come home is tune another piano. Plus I do a lot of composing and recording that I use sequencing software and recording equipment for.

Todd

I prefer acoustic for the sound and touch, and digital for the portability. A Roland RD-700 (digital) I played the other day completely blew me away with its awesome sound, though.
