My computer has optical Dolby 5.1 output and I use a quality home stereo receiver with optical in as an amp. I also want to mix in my keyboard though so I can hear smartmusic.com accompaniment through the same speakers as my digital piano uses.

One option is send my piano signal to a computer input and let the computer mix it. I'm guessing this will be low quality because I just have the sound chip that came with my motherboard. But the added benefit here is that if I want to record onto my PC, it's already wired up.

Other options are to use regular stereo out from my PC and a stereo mixer, have a separate amp and speakers for my PC, or use my keyboard for MIDI only and generate the piano sound from software my PC.

Any recommendations or opinions? I currently have it set to separate receiver inputs and it's a pain changing the input whenever I jump from PC to piano and back.

The quality of onboard audio chips has improved considerably in recent years. I would suggest trying the first option - provided everything is configured correctly, there should not be a discernible difference in audio quality when the digital piano is connected to your computer.

Good luck,
James
