I'm going to live on a (very) small appartment for a year and am looking for a stage piano to use there. There's really no room for anything else. Right now I have a Yamaha CLP 990.

I've read good reviews about the Kawai ES3 and ES5. However, very little stores seem to sell them and the only store where I can try them is many miles away.
One guy told me on the phone they didn't sell the ES3 because they didn't use multiple samples? Is this true and is that a disadvantage then? Does that mean the dynamic range is entirely modeled? I was surprised because the reviews I've read said it was one of the most expressive stage pianos available today.

I am not an expert on Kawai's digital piano, but judging from the demo mp3's, it's hard to imagine that these are one layer pianos. You can check the manual of both of these at the www.Kawai.de site.

As for why they are not selling the ES-3 anymore, because it is being replaced by the newer ES-4 model, I presume. It should be available at the end of this month/begining of next month at the latest according to Kawai.Check it out:

I am in great anticipation for the arrival of the ES-4 myself. I sent an e-mail to Kawai US, and they told me to keep watching for it at Sam Ash.

Thanks for the info!

I'm going to try an ES 5 on Saturday, found one closer by smile Too bad I need the piano so soon, otherwise I would've waited for the new ES 4... Anyhow, I'm going to ask the salesman about the sampling of the ES3/5. On this site there's info on the "harmonic imaging" technology Kawai uses, but I can't make out how they took samples.

Don't get too concerned with technology. There are lots of buzzwords floaing around these days that are nothing more than marketing tools ("harmonic imaging", etc.). I've played 3 and 4 layer pianos that sounded superior to 8 or even 16 layer pianos. The point is that advanced technology alone doesn't tell you much. It's how that technology is implemented that will determine the quality of the instrument.

Does it sound good? Does it feel good? These are ultimately the only questions that matter.

Played a Kawai ES 5 yesterday, and it was a huge disappointment. The piano sound was very good, but the dynamics were crap. At a certain point, playing just a little harder made the volume shoot upwards, very odd.
Next to it stood a Yamaha P 120, cheaper and better. I bought it smile
Anyhow, so much for the great Graded Hammer AHA 3 mechanics... Fancy buzzwords indeed.
Thanks for the help!
