I plan to buy either CLP 170 (running out of stock) or CLP 270. The problem is that, while CLP 170 is sligthly cheaper, (168 GBP, 300 US$) CLP 270 does not seem to have significantly improved from its precedesser. (identical keyboard action...)
Yamaha website claims some differences in sound sampling and they are:

1) Tone Generation: Number of Dynamic Steps:
3 for CLP 170
4 for CLP 270

2) Polyphony: Number of Polyphony:
128 + 32 (XG) for CLP 170
128 for CLP 270

3) Tone Generation: ROM Capacity
36MB (Piano)/54MB (All) + 10MB (XG) for CLP 170
44MB (Piano)/60MB (All) + 6.5MB (XG) for CLP 270

Is there a sigmificant merit in CLP270 for the $300 difference between CLP 170 and 270? The increased dynamic step in CLP 270 seems good but it lacks the added 32 (XG) polyphony in CLP 170...
Please help me out about this. Thanks in advance!

if it's just $300 difference, i'd go for CLP270, since the latest model is usually a better choice. CLP270 does seem to have better piano sound according to the specs.

I have a 270 but have not been able to hear one next to 170 but it is very good piano and the new uSB connector is good.I didnt realize the XG rom was smaller but as I mainly use for piano sample it doesnt really matter ,there are some reasonable xg sounds but I wouldnt say they are the pianos strongest selling point. and I have been told by a yamaha insider that new samples were added, some were altered and some kept from the 170

Thanks for the replies. I may just order now since the CLP 270 deal is very good.
BTW what is this XG thing on digital pianos? Also, can someone please explain how this new USB to device or host feature would help entering notes on computer to produce MIDI, to say?
