Thanks all for all of the good info....last night I pulled the trigger at Sam Ash and bought the Yamaha PF 500. Now if only my new teacher would get home from Switzerland!

Congrats! One year ago I bought the PF500 and my daughter is getting fast quality improvement since then. I'm a happy Dad saving to buy an acoustic piano for her 16-birthday (year 2009). If, if...

Congratulations on your good choice. I certainly have not regretted mine since I bought it in July. It seems to sound even better after some time playing-in, so it's all good!

Thanks for all of the encouraging words...now, any suggestions for "learn to play" software? I can't wait for the teacher to return ;> Also, what USB-MIDI interface hookup do you use? It seems as if everyone buys the M-Audio Uno. Any thoughts? Thanks,
Cat

M-Audio makes good stuff. You might also try the Fastlane by MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn).

On my p250 I just use a plain usb cable. Is there any advantage to buying something else?

The PF-500 contains a USB port that can directly connect to a PC or MAC with USB. You simply need a USB cable and install the driver on your computer. Don't forget to configure the MIDI out on your keyboard to use the USB port. It defaults to the standard MIDI port.

Enjoy!!

Details can be found on Page 57 of your owners manual, but simply stated there is a small switch near the midi ports labeled "midi PC-2 Mac USB". Just flip it all the way over to USB and you should be ready to go.

BTW:

Be sure to turn on your computer on first (some times it is necessary to let it completely boot-up, but not always) and then turn on your keyboard. Avoid changing the MIDI/USB switch while the keyboard is on to avoid problems (It will not damage your board but it might not have the desired effect.)

Thanks, finally got the USB A to USB B and everything installed easily and flawlessly. I really like the Piano Suite software that came with it....I am already learning to play with two hands ;> What a joy this is!
