Having tried out a few digital stage pianos, mainly Rolands and Yamahas, I couldn't find one that was exactly what I wanted. I liked the Yamaha P120 but I felt the range of tones to be rather limited and quite boring. Recently I heard about sound modules that can give a large number of good tones.
- Do you guys think these are good value for
money?
- Are they expandable?
- Are there any ones that you would recommend
$300-450.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here are some that fit your budget (and some that don't!)

You have to listen to them to decide if they're an improvement over what's built in to the piano

Excuse my ignorance but if I was to buy a sound module would I need to also buy an amp or could the sounds be played through the pianos internal speakers?

If your piano has a "line input", then you can run the sound module through your piano's internal speakers. Otherwise you'll need to run the sound module through external speakers of some sort.

I personally have a Roland XV-3080 with an SRX-02 piano sound card added. This is hooked up to a Yamaha Motif 8 keyboard and I run the output of both into a mixer so that I can combine the sounds of both synths together.

I highly recommend the XV-3080 if you like the Roland sound!! They aren't made any more (been replaced with the XV-5080 and more recently with the Fantom XR) bu you should be able to pick one up on eBay.

Thanks for your help guys. Rodney do you know how the Roland JV 1010 compares to the XV-3080. I think the latter is a bit out of my price range.

The JV1010 is a predecessor to the XV series (3080, 5080, etc.), so it's not quite as advanced. It can accomodate a single JV series expansion board. The XV3080 can accomodate both JV and XV series expansion boards. However, the JV1010 is a really great value for the money. It has the sounds of one of the most popular Roland expansion boards, The Session Board, built into it's memory. It sounds very good considering how little it costs.

I'll second that SteveJ. The JV1010 is an awsome board for the price BUT don't expect to get the level of realism of the more modern synths.

Obviously the XV sounds better than the JV and the Fantom XR sonds better than the XV series. The synthesis method is the same, but as the models evolve, they get faster processors and more/better effects which allows the voice programmes to get more creative. The XV calss also allows you to use SRX expansion boards which contain 64MB of samples of the 16MB of a JV expansion. (Not necessarily better / just more voices)

You may want to dig a little deeper and splurge for an XV-2020 to get that little extra but I doubt you would be dissapointed with the JV.

Here's an inside secret:
The XV5080 is supposed to be identical to the XV3080 (same sound set, etc.) with the exception of adding 3rd party sample playback ability. In reality the 5080 sounds quite a bit better than the 3080 (not that the 3080 sounds bad). It's just more "hi-fi". The cool thing is that the XV2020 also sounds better than the XV3080 -- and it's less money! Roland was well aware of this. The XV2020 is really the replacement for the 3080...

But I agree with Rodney -- the Fantom XR rocks! (I have a Fantom X8)
