Appropriiate choices in music for weddings/receptions can greatly depend upon region, ethnicity, religion etc.

What standard selections would you add to this list?
  • Mendelson's "Wedding March"
  • Wagner's "Bridal Chorus"
  • Bach's "Jesus, Joy of Man's..."
  • Schubert's "Ava Maria"
  • Pacobel's "Cannon"

Well, you have to add "Prince of Denmark's March" also called "Trumpet Voluntary" for the traditional bridesmaid's entry. Variously attributed to Purcell or Clarke.

A great recessional accepted by most I suggest it to is the "Hornpipe" or "Allegro Maestoso" from Handel's Watermusic. I've also had more than one request for the Bach "Air on a G String."

Some pieces, I don't know if they're standard, but I think they'll fit nicely:

Bach - Air on a G String
Mozart - Romance from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
Mahler - Adagietto from Symphony No. 5

and finally

Stockhausen - Klavierstück X :p

I have an ice cream. I cannot mail it, for it will melt.

What about:

Air from Water Music (Handel)
The Heavens Declare the Glory of God (Psalm 19 - Marcello)
Toccata (Widor)
La Réjouissance (Handel)
Arrival of the Queen of Sheba (Handel)

J.S. Bach's Arioso is a beautiful piece for weddings and its available in either organ or piano solo. If I am performing on the piano instead of the organ, I use selections like:

Mendelsohn's Songs Without Words, Op. 53, No. 1
Mendelsohn's On Wings of Song
Calm as the Night - Carl Bohm
Adagio from Sonata Pathetique - Beethoven
Liebestraum - Liszt
Intermezzo Op. 118, No. 2 - Brahms
Clare de Lune - Debussy
Moonlight Sonata, Movements I & II (I like to use mvt. II in my postlude because it has a joyous, celebrative sound).
Vivaldi's Spring
The Lord's Prayer
The Wedding Prayer (Glascow/Dunlap)
Prelude in C Major - J.S. Bach (I tend to play this a little bit slower with a lot of emotion. It seems to work well at the beginning of the prelude when I'm a bit nervous and adapting to the piano).

If I'm performing on the organ, I use most of the selections mentioned in prior posts, maybe adding in some wedding hymns such as:

In Heavenly Love Abiding
All Creatures of our God and King
Now Thank We All Our God (I have an organ solo arranged in the style of Bach that is really sparkling and makes a great postlude).
Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us
O Perfect Love

Hope this helps.

Lyn B.
