I'll post this here because on the pianist forum people showed interest in Debussy/Ravel:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. He was born to Manuel-Achille and Sophie Manoury Debussy in 1862. What kind of business did his parents run?

2. Debussy's father was extremely slow to recognize his son's musical talents. What type of career did he actually envision for his son?

3. What patron did Debussy and Tchaikovsky share in common?

4. For what composition prize did Debussy compete over a span of three years before finally winning it in 1884?

5. TRUE or FALSE: Debussy coined the term "Impressionist" when referring to his music. ?

6. By what nickname did Debussy refer to Gabrielle Dupont?

7. Name Debussy's lone opera. ?

8. How was Debussy different from other composers of his day regarding the placement of the titles of his preludes?

9. What was the name and nickname of Debussy's only child?

10. What kind of turmoil was occurring in Paris when Debussy died in March of 1918?

False. If I remember correctly, he disliked that term in reference to his own music - much like Chopin disliking the term "Romantic" in reference to his music.

He placed them at the end

2. Did he want him to be a lawyer?

5. I believe that Debussy preferred the term 'Symbolism' in reference to his music, but I'll have to check.
