When I finally finetuned a 1879 NY Steinway B (after rebuilding it),around E, F higher than 440 A, I heard sidesounds that don't belong there. Kinda metallic. But when I put my finger on the trichord from the rear duplex, so in between capo bar and pins, it stopped. Probably the metal 'stringguiders' that make the strings symphatic from there to the capo bar aren't solid anymore. Maybe I should try turning them a bit, or is there a better solution?

Did you seat the strings on the front bearing bars? Was the bellyman felt for the two treble sections replaced. The felt if replaced could be too thin.

Are the screws that hold them in tight?

'Seat the strings on the front bearing bars' do you imply pulling them up from behind the capo bar with a string hook? What do you mean with front bearing bars? Each trichord has a kind of open agraffe where the strings are seated. That part resonates. Can't see what it has to do with felt, there is no felt in that area, only just after that point, the round pieces of felt making shure that it doesn't resonate between the open agraffe and the pin.

To seat the strings on the front bearing bars you use a soft piece of brass rod to massage the strings down. You won't believe how much noise after restrining can occur from this alone. That's the felt I'm talking about. Has it been replaced?

Yes , the felt has been replaced, you think that's the problem? So I should massage the strings down starting from the open agraffes towards the capo bar?

The resonance problem is in the part where the string leaves the capo bar till the open agraffe. The felt does its work after that part

Rick, yes, try massaging the strings down from the felt over the bars towards the capo. Not to hard though. Is the felt the same dimension?
