Any opinions about a 4'6" Art case Gulbransen Grand built between 1935 and 1938 serial # 322945 ? Case is light color wood with crazed finish but not all that bad. Legs are curvy like Queen Anne and have carvings where they meet the sides of the case. Very simple pedal trapworks with a right shift una chorda and middle pedal that lifts the bass dampers. Bench also has elaborate carving on legs and curved legs. Owners asked me for an idea of the age and value . From what I have found out so far Gulbransen made many, many pianos. Overall it is in decent condition- a few loose tuning pins and some minor string rust, small sound board crack.

Hi JIMBOB. I have worked on a lot of Gulbransen verticals and a few grands, but all have been older than the one you describe. As you probably know, Gulbransen was not know for it's quality, in fact they were on the lower end of the spectrum as far quality goes. But there were a lot of them sold here in the "poorer" south in the early to mid 1900's.

As far as value, it's hard to estimate. Without seeing it, in this area, I would say it is not worth more than 1,500 to $2,000. Being that old it undoubtedly needs some major work. Glad you're back from your trip to Boston.

Regards,
Ron
