The lyre of my grand piano started to make noice
while I was playing so I removed it and put some new leather in which stopped the noice. Anyway, when I put the lyre back I notice that the sound of the piano changes depending on how tight I screw the lyre. When I loosen the lyre a bit the tone is clearer and fuller but at the same time more uneven. When I tighten the lyre the tone is softer, not as loud and more even throughout the keyboard. The hammers still hit all strings when the lyre is tightened.

Can anyone explain this phenomena?

I wonder, if perchance somehow your lyre bolts are too long, and positioned directly underneath action bed. When they tighten too much they actually push up/through keybed and lift back-end of keyframe (action), changing hammer travel and blow distance in centner of piano?

Is it also possible that due to larger, thicker leather, when you tighten lyre it begins to shift action? I,e. does the Una Corda need adjusting because of more leather and it is too tight and engaging action shifting simply by tightening lyre?

You are quite right. I put on some extra leather and as a result the una corda slightly shifted so the hammer hit the string a bit off the groves. I have now sanded down the leather and everything works fine.
