Only since I've noticed it, am I going to ask the following given:

S&S B (new strings June '02), been at pitch since March.

vs

Schimmel 130 vertical, old strings

RH over last two weeks has not gone outside 40-50%. Pins are tight on both pianos (both young blocks).

The bigger scaled Steinway begins to waver in the unisons sooner than the Schimmel over this period and I am wondering if its because longer strings generally loose their unison before shorter ones. I didn't think it would still be settling out this late after the restring 1yr ago and March pitch raise.

Any ideas. Lastly, my own efforts at tuning for stability, I don't believe, are to blame, as the Schimmel sits tight.

A re-strung piano needs 7 tunings before it goes back to the customer, then quarterly tunings the first year. This is due to the stretching of new piano wire. I would venture to guess the re-strung steinway strings are still stretching.

ChrisW,the Steinway has a bigger soundboard than the vertical, and moves in minute increaments which will cause unisons to waver no matter how stable the humidity is.The grand is more exposed to the environment than the closed up upright, playing along with the subtle changes in temp and humidity will show up as slightly out of tune unisons. This is true of almost all grands.A concert instrument tuned before the stage lights go on will respond to this change by almost uniformly going sharp when the lights come up. laugh Some grands stay rock solid, and others,well...
