I'm curious whether techs out there still use client cards, which the Potter course talks about, or whether most people now keep all their records on their computer. (Or PDA.)

I still like the cards. I take them in with me to refresh myself on any particulars of the piano or the client. I also have every piano on a data base that I can sort by last date tuned, by town, or other special needs like requested tunings every three months; that sort of thing. When I complete each card, I enter the basics into the computer. It's just nice to be able to jot a note down on the card while at the piano, like a small verbal quote for some future work.

My pocket PC is a real multi-tasker. Besides Tunelab, appointments, and Mapopolis--kind of a poor person's GPS--I keep my contact database (backed up by SD card in case of catastrophe) with me at all times, and jot everything in it as I go: special needs for future appointments, temperature, humidity, completed repairs and tuning information. It's like client cards without having to decipher my own heiroglyphics...I've always been better at typing than penmanship!

It synchs up to the home computer every night for further backup. Very useful tool indeed.

I keep records electronically. Specifically: a running service record on every piano I work on.

I do have a paper file which I take with me to appts. This comes in particularly handy if I have previously marked a "loose pin" or some other possible recurring problem.

I have never used the cards

Jim, do you mean you have a file folder for each customer? Or a book with all your customers and notes in it?
