Does anyone know if the keyboard cover on a Baldwin Grand comes off? If so, what is the procedure to remove it? Something has been dropped down inside and there is no way to retrieve it other than from the front. Thanks,

I've got an 1988 Baldwin L. If yours is similiar to mine, you can remove the keyboard cover by opening the cover all the way. Begin to close it until you get an angle like --> / Pull outward. The right and left side of the cover simply slip off when you pull. The cover is held on by two "pins" and the cover slides over these. You actually have to pull out and up. Do the reverse to put it back in. Be careful not to scratch the sides of the piano.

If you need to remove the actual action, there are several screws under the keyboard on the edge of the bottom of the piano. Once you remove the screws, the key slip, basically the slat of wood in front of the keyboard, can be removed. You can then slide the keyboard and the action out. CAUTION: doing this without knowing how to put it back in properly can cause alignment problems.

Good luck!

Thanks BamBam. I gave it a try and still could not get the cover off. I can see a metal piece at each end and I assume that the cover hinges on them. This is a 1958 model so it may be a little different from yours. I'll keep trying. Thanks,

There are two ways that Baldwin cheek blocks are held, either by screws into them from the bottom of the keybed, or under the rubber button on the top of the cheek block. Once you have removed the keyslip and taken the screws out of the cheek blocks, the fallboard comes out with the cheek blocks.

Thanks for all the help. On this particular Baldwin, removing two screws from underneath released the two end blocks which enabled the keyboard cover to be removed. Thanks,

Once the cheek blocks are out, you can remove the action. However, I would not advise doing it unless you are very careful. If you accidentally push the end keys down, you can break the hammers. Also, everything is very heavy.

I pass this warning along, because you can get into trouble unless you know what you are doing, and if you don't know right away to look for the screws under the keybed, you don't know what you are doing.
