I am looking for direction on where to look for a serial number on an old? Knabe grand. There isn't anything on the plate, on the music stand ends, anywhere in the action (technician showing piano looked in all those spots, as did I).
The piano has five legs and sounds lovely. Sustain goes on and on, rich in harmonics. Short, 5'6"
Thanks for your help.

Knabe grands had the serial numbers in several places. Most common is probably on the plate near the lid prop, but I have also seen them on the soundboard. Very often people remove them and do not replace them.

Check under the piano on any braces, the top and underside of the soundboard, and the edge of the key bed.

But with the description of 5 legs, I'm thinking 1920-1930? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that most of the pianos I see with this style/configuration of leg come from that period.

I'm assuming the treble and bass legs under the key bed both have a double leg and only one on the tail end?

My 1921 Knabe 5'7" has the number in ink on the plate and stamped into the wood on the top of the lyre (not visible unless the lyre is removed).

Thanks for your replies. Stamped on the top of the lyre. Wow. I believe the vintage is of the 20's to 30's. The decals and plate stamp have Knabe Baltimore. But I suppose when Knabe was purchased by American Piano and moved to New York (?) they would use the same details even though the pianos built were of the stencil variety.
But, it sounds good, looks fair and the price is right, I think $1300 or so. I'll have the action redone (Renner) and I think I'll have a nice piano. Comments on my plan are welcome.

I should add the two legs are on the keyboard end, the piano has been restrung sometime and repinned. The plate was rebronzed, taking out the inked serial number. The regulation is not good (see Renner comment).

I am also looking for the serial number on a Knabe 6'4" grand. So far, the only numbers found by a technician were 1929 stamped somewhere on the action (maybe the year the action was manufactured according to my piano technician), and the numbers "4849" stamped on the bottom of the music stand and also written on the front edge of the keybed. We've checked the plate, soundboard, and the lyre as previously suggested. Anywhere else we can look, or get more clues?
Thanks! John

I had the same quandary with my old 1920s Knabe. I found the serial number on the tops of the legs and pedal. If you take one or the other off you might see it stamped in the bare wood. Good luck.

My 1920 6' 4" Knabe grand has the serial number behind the treble cheek block on the vertical structure face about a foot back.
