I am looking for the year my parents' player was built... I'm guessing around 1920. It is a Lindeman @ Sons upright. Serial # on plate is 125493.

Thanks in advance.

Pierce Piano Atlas puts #125493 as built in 1913.

Are uprights this old (1913) usually tuned to A=440 or A=435? I think I remember reading that the standard for A was lower during those times.

Nowadays they are usually tuned to 440, although they may have been designed at 435. The only difference that the pitch makes that might make a difference to the piano is the tension on the strings and plate. However, most, if not all, pianos of that era were not designed to close enough tolerances for it to matter.

I agree, the only exception would be a piano with a three quarter plate, and I do run into one of these now and then. I do not try to bring these to A-440 because of their age and the extra tension.

Ron
