Nice article in the Jan PTG Journal. smile Funny how children can't always quite explain what's wrong.

Hey, Curry --

Thanks for your kind words, which I have been cherishing! I've been on the road and haven't been able to respond, but I really appreciate your encouragement.

Odd thing this week -- a customer called saying that her son had noticed "a funny noise" and could I come out and fix it. I was pretty sure what the problem was (sound familiar?) and that the spinet action would have to be pulled, so I gave a prediction of needing a hefty amount of time. The customer called back, we talked, and at one point she said, "He's only eight, maybe we could do something simple!" Oh, yes, I thought, I just read an article in the Journal about that -- and then I remembered, I wrote it. Quite clearly I am not a fast learner. (I did the simple thing, the piano sounds fine, the little boy is thrilled.)

Thanks again --

I read the article too and thought it was great. I guessed it was you who wrote it but was not sure. Many customers can not explain exactly what is wrong but they know something doesn't sound right or does not work right. One of our greatest challenges is hunting down noises and fixing them. I recently fixed a noise on a full sized WW Kimball upright. At first I thought it was the felt on the hammer rest rail but it turned out to be the felt under the rail that sits on the action brackets- hard as a rock. Just the other day I worked on this big, beautifully carved Henry Miller upright. The left pedal barely moved the rest rail. The pedals had no real adjustment points but working from the bottom up I found the problem- there was no felt between the top of the pedal rod and the arm on the rest rail. Every day you learn something new.
