Hi Everyone,

Since all of you deal with all sorts of stuff, I wonder if someone might give me a lead. I am looking for a Steinway lid lock key for a 1920 S&S M. What I'm trying to find is the classic lyre logo handle in nickel/chrome plate. I recently had our family piano rebuilt by Tim Farley, Madison WI (absolutely spectacular, but that is another story), and have no interest in locking the lid, it just looks cool in the lock!

My own piano is a 1929 S&S M (also rebuilt) and it still has the key! My piano has brass metalwork, so now I am trying to find one to match all of the silver metalwork of the new re-build.

Any ideas would certainly be appreciated. I am not against taking a brass key and having it plated, if someone knows where I can find one.

BTW - I have googled every supplier and can find standard replacement keys, but I'm trying to find a Steinway logo key.

Have you tried Steinway?

Schaff lists them in their catalog. They only sell to professionals in the piano field. Ask your technician to get one for you. Be sure you are sitting down when he tells you the price. (Remember, it's a Steinway).

Or, do I buy a key and the piano happens to come with it? LOL

Thanks for the info. Can you give me a ballpark figure? Twenty bucks would be OK, but $200 would cause me to take drugs and I'd get over it real fast!

Generic keys are a few bucks. SPECIAL keys with logos cost more. After all, in your words, " it looks cool in the lock". For a specifics ask your technician. He is the one who is going to sit down, place the order, pay for it, recieve it and deliver it to you. For how much?
Certainly less than a new Steinway, don't worry.

Those keys are increasingly hard to find. I found one in perfect condition when I pulled the plate out of a B Victorian circa 1900. It was far and away my favorite part of the piano. Guess I'm getting jaded in my old age. I saw some reproductions on Ebay once, but they were brass and rather poor looking so I passed.

I have one that I keep in my stringing drawer just to look at. They were made with all that lovely attention to detail that was so common at the turn of the century.

Keep an eye out in Ebay. You never know.

Speaking of keys...would anyone know what a 1919 M&H key looks like.

Not having any key right now and have entertained the idea of getting one, this thread has sparked a new quest ... if anyone has a picture of one and could post, it certainly would help to start...thanks

That's a M&H key??? Now I wanna know where can I get one, can that one be had?? nothing like having a fish on the line before you bait it...lol

Anyone know what a Knabe key looks like?

My key came with my piano (1923). I have seen one other, which came with its piano. If you can get Mr. Peabody to fire up the wayback machine...

Our Steinway (1920) has its key, too.
