LOL!! Putting strings back on isn't all there is to restringing! I haven't gone back through all the threads, but didn't you also replace the hammers? You've got lots of string leveling, hammer mating and voicing yet to go!

Hello JDelmore,

I did not replace hammers yet. I realize there is a lot of regulation still needed, but i had to pull it up to pitch, and check out the sound before i go any further. When i strung it the first time, and just replaced the original wire with the same sizes, i was told that due to differences in todays steel, i would need to change guages. Since tuning for me, is an all day affair, i just replaced them, without pulling them to pitch, and tuning. Now, that i've tuned it, like i mentioned before, it sounds like church bells. The repairs done on the bass bridge seem to be holding up pretty well. The bass sounds ok, it does not have the ringing like the treble section. I know the hammers need filing, to properly mate up with the strings, at least 10 are not striking like they should. The new damper felts are slowly coming along. There is a LOT of regulation still needed. I've heard people say, that after a number of tunings, the piano sounded much better. I'm hoping thats the case here.

Thanks,
Mike

Sounds like you're on the right track, then. It was interesting reading the Atlantic Monthly article recently posted about the building of a Steinway. I wonder how many people took note of how crappy it was described as sounding before coming under the hands of Sr. Parada (the tone regulator), as opposed to how nice it sounded afterwards?

WHY DON'T YOU FIND SOME SOFTWARE FOR DOING UP A
BIRD-CAGE ?
YOU WERE SAYING A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO THAT YOU
CAN NOT IMAGINE A 'PRO' NOT HAVING SOFTWARE THAT
CAN WORK OUT JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING SO FIND A 'PRO'
WITH THE RIGHT SOFTWARE AND THERE YOU ARE.
IFFF INDEED THIS IS THE SAME MR.STILAMAZED WHICH
I THINK IT MUST BE BECAUSE THE POST IS STILL
THERE.APRIL I THINK.
very nice pictures
YOUR'S ECT.

Wake up Sloane, it's called tunelab. BTW,the new strings are settling in, and it's starting to sound pretty nice. I wish you guys could hear, and feel this little old birdcage, the touch is amazingly light. Not loose and wobbley, like you might expect with a keyboard thats over 100 years old. Oh, and by the way, the statement i made was not "I can't imagine a pro not having software" It was "I can't imagine a pro asking such a stupid question".

STILL AMAZED.
QUOTE:
"the people who design these programs, who have a
complete understanding of piano technology, all of
the variables, from the felt of the hammer, striking
distance,wire gauge,speaking length,the difference
between the type of steel made today as opposed to
last century,is considered when programming
scaling software.I just can't imagine a pro not
knowing this"
SO GET A PROGRAM WHICH TELLS YOU HOW TO DO BASIC
AND BORING WORK LIKE DOING UP AN OLD 'BIRD CAGE'
OR GET ONE OFF A 'PRO'(I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE A
'PRO' NOT HAVING ONE) OR GET A RENNER CATALOGUE
WHICH HAS ALL THE PARTS YOU NEED FOR THE JOB AND
OFFERS BOOKS ON REPAIRING PIANOS FOR BEGINNERS
AND ALTHOUGH IT SEEMS TO BE YOUR HOBBY,IT WILL
SAVE YOU FROM ASKING STUPID QUESTIONS !

Sloaney,

You should really read through a thread, in it's entirety, before you comment. You're so off the mark on this, that i'm beginning to think you're drunk, or stupid. Maybe you're drunk, and stupid. In any event, i own several pianos, but this "boring little birdcage" is the one i have the most interest in. If you cannot see the beauty in it,thats ok. BTW, please feel free to post any photos of pianos that you have restored, i would be very interested in seeing some of the work you do, on those "Big Exciting" pianos.

If I ask a stupid question, does that means I am stupid, or is it only the question that is stupid?

I know that is out of thread, but I can not stop my impulses...

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people. I'm not calling you stupid, but you asked, and thats my answer. I can't control my impulses either.

I don't understand what kind of pleasure can anyone achieve by treating the others as stupid people whithout a reason.

This forum is intented to other than reading about forist's personal frustration.

Can you please return to the original theme of this thread! At the begining it was interesting to see how a non tech was going to rebuild an old birdcage, but now there is only garbage in this thread...

Good Bye!

Gadzar,

What the heck are you talking about? All of this non-sense regarding software, and stupid questions has nothing to do with you, or that strange fellow from germany. You two decided to inject yourselves into the middle of someone elses conversation, now what... your feelings are hurt? This was an interesting thread, i thought i could get some advice, maybe show off a little {thats right, i'm kind of proud of the results so far} but now it's deteriorated to the point where i,m being told my piano is "Boring" and i should "Stop asking stupid questions" although, i don't recall asking either of you anything. If i've offended you, or hurt you're feelings, i'm sorry. It was not my intention. BTW, when MR.SLOANE decides to post photos of his "Exciting" pianos, feel free to join in, and post yours

Might be hard to find a set of hammers to match.

A two pound sledge, (or sludge as they call it in Michigan), and a tuning pin punch drives them in pretty well.

Micky !
You still here ? IF you don't want to learn the
art of building pianos in South-East Asia as I
recomended, why not save a a bit of money (for
what your currency is worth these days)
and open a piano shop in
Bagdad taking most of the regular contributors to
this forum with you ?
The locals would love it ! and if
'Music hath alarums to sooth the savage breast'
you may even do some good !
I have said in a post that I would only post
pictures to prospective customers and you are not
!
! As for the music that I compose, you
would need the capability of abstract thought for
it to mean anything so that excludes you !
-----------------------------------------------
Anyway this is'nt myspace or u-tube so I won't
use it to sell or promote my own music:
Nor anyone elses !

If you have'nt got the manners to address me as
Mr. Sloane then don't send me any more posts.
I would prefer to address you under you real name
but,
Mr. Stilamazed is too silly and first names
should only be used by consent or friends and as
I am not inclined to use this forum as a friend
site I suggest that anyone replying to my posts
address me in the proper form and leave a proper
name for me to reply to.
I think that reading the right books on basic
repair is better than sitting on your computer
and asking other people with too much time on
they're hands to talk you through it 'though iff
there are points that you can't grasp, then ask
the forum for advice as you have indeed done.
(Not that they will prevent you from achieving
remarkable feats of workmanship such as drilling
out the holes in tuning pins to get the wire
through) Reading books can be more fun than the
Net most of the time. Why not give it a try
because people were building and playing
wonderfull Pianos long before they had
electricity.

TO ALL TECHNICIANS.

Does anyone know of a better alternative to
mountain-goat leather for use on traditional
'Wiener' grand hammers and other kids of
historical instrument hammers
See 'Wiener grand mechcanic' (Wien is Vienna)
And what about sprips for later pianos ?
I'm really looking forward to to this one !

Your's ect.

The skin of the ***...
Usually from illiterate or itinerant Asses....found in most countries...flourish in Germany so I'm told...there could well be one very near to where you are...the *** doesn't have to be dead, so if you carefully remove a strip it won't hurt a bit until you sit down.
