I really enjoy the sound from my old Steinway K-52 and recently it received first tuning in my house. My piano tuner suggested that the K-52 has a soundboard and string length equivalent in size to a 6.5' grand. Can anyone verify that or point me to links that might?

Thanks much,
Mark

There is nothing to it. You have only to hit the right note at the right time, and instrument plays itself.

Sounboard area close. Bass string length no.

I am not certain about soundboard size, either. Steinway uprights have rather large cutoffs in the lower treble and upper bass area which should not be included in the area calculations. But that just improves the sound, which is the real criterion.

I love the K52. Could be one of the best uprights of all time, new or old.

I hear analogies to grands all the time. I think this is just stupid. There is little or no relationship between a vertical and a grand in string length and soundboard area. they are completely different. Bridge placement, cutoffs, speaking length, board shape are all variables in the comparison.

Thanks for the feedback. As mentioned, the sound is what matters and this old piano sounds great in my living room.

thanks again...

The fact that you love your piano is the only issue to concern yourself with.

If you ever decided to get a (high quality) 6.5 (or similar size) grand, you would be surprised at the huge difference in tone and volume.

When space and cost are not limiting factors, you may want to look into that some day ... or not.
