Hello all. I just recently became a certified Piano Technician, at the age of 18, and thought it'd be a grand idea to get rooted in a forum for other tuners and technicians. I figured this will help me greatly in expanding my knowledge, and besides, it's always great to have someone to get questions answered by. Just wanted to say hi, and introduce myself.

Your start in the business is like mine- still a kid. But my start was almost 30 years ago and we were called Registered Craftsman then.

I learned much from a great craftsman who was older than my father, and I am still friends with him now 3 decades later.

Though it was the 1970's my tuning test was one of the first that made use of an ETD to quantify what I had done.

30 years later I'm still tuning, but a lot uglier.

Thanks guys. It's good to know you don't get bashed for being a newbie around here. That's awesome. I'm trying to come up with a company logo, and wanted to show you what it looks like so far, but because I did it using Microsoft Word, it won't save as a .jpeg file. lol :rolleyes: If I ever figure something out, I'll let you know.

If you want to convert your picture to a jpeg, here is a quick and dirty method:

1. Display it on your screen in Word.
2. Press the "print screen" buttton on your keyboard.
3. Open the paint program found under accessories.
4. Go to Edit, and paste.

5. erase all you don't want from your screenshot.

6. Save As.... (remember to select jpeg!)

Congratulations on your accomplishment. It sounds like you see receiving your certification as just the beginning.

Out of curiosity, do you plan to make a career of tuning and tech work, or is it a hobby?

Do you plan to go to college as well? Are you studying music?

I tried that little procedure you suggested, Ron. I'm afraid whenever I did hit the print screen button, it didn't do a thing.

I'm not sure I made sense of what you said: "It sounds like you see receiving your certification as just the beginning." I took that you were suggesting that I sound excited about becoming certified and that it's only the beginning of things to come. Am I right? Sorry, I'm a little hungry right now...and thus can't concentrate too well. I do plan to make a career out of this. However, I'm not against using it to supplement my income in the future. If perhaps I was able to find a greater career/calling in life, I would still do this! I did go to college for a while, and was planning on receiving my bachelors, if not masters in Music Education, with a focus in voice (not piano lol). I will be going to school this August and studying Church Music, because one thing I want to do is be a Minister of Music. I absolutely LOVE directing choirs, and helping others. I'm not patting my own back here, but at my church, this Christmas, we were learning a rather difficult cantata arrangement. Our director wasn't getting it too well, so I stepped in and helped. The difference and response of the choir was amazing. Everyone told me how much they enjoy it when I conduct. I love, and sincerely desire to do that someday.
This is irrelevant to how my life has pretty much been saturated by music. I also want to study Therapeutic Massage. I know it doesn't go together, but I love massaging. And I have people begging for a back rub, etc. all the time. haha Just thought I'd share a bit.

Ok, onto plan B. To extract a picture from Word, use Save As Web Page. (under File menu) Notice the location. After saving, go find it! It should have create a new folder. Inside the folder, each picture should be extracted as a file. I think it saves it as a jpeg, but if not, you should be able to convert it once it is seperated from Word.

It took me back to 1975, when I called my brand new piano business "Perfect Pitch Piano Works". It is a super nice graphic. No, I did not keep that name long, because I felt that putting my own name out there was the way to go for me: Sam Lewis Piano it has been ever since. If they love my work, my name's on it. If they don't..... well, I try extra hard to make sure that doesnt happen because....it's my name on it. Just a personal preference.

Thanks guys. It really helps that I've got some "mentors", it seems, already to encourage me. Not everyone around here thinks my chosen craft is a good one... In fact, is rather looked down upon. Most have the impression that a "piano tuner" is someone who couldn't hack anything else, and settled for this (a "losers only" job). My plans and ambitions are to change that stereotype. I see it as a wondeful art, and highly respected craft. What's really cool, is when you find a girl (who happens to be really hot!) that thinks what you want to do is the most incredible thing ever! hehe Yes, I must confess, this did happen to me. haha But seriously, I take great pride in what I've chosen to pursue. And can't wait to start tuning pianos professionally!
