I just recently purchased a Gulbransen 1927 upright player piano. The player pieces have been removed, each key plays perfectly, the keys are weighted perfectly, and I bought it for $200.00!!! Quite a steal!!!

I just had it tuned, and cleaned by the best piano tuner in my area, who's also the President of the Oregon Music Teacher's Association. My piano tuner said it was a fabulous old piano. The loud pedal works great, and the soft pedal for some reason has been reattached.

My piano has wonderful tone quality, and wonderful pitch, and is holding it's tuning nicely. I do want to have it tuned again in about 3 to 4 months, just to insure it keeps tuned. The people I purchased it from, just wanted to get rid of it to create more space in their home. I think it is Walnut, but can't be sure on the wood. It has a natural finish on it, and I was thinking about refinishing it this summer. I was also thinking about staining it. But am holding off on it until I get a professional opinion.

What is the value of a 1927 Gulbransen these days?

Sincerely,
Lisa Lanphear

About what you paid for it.($200) Pianos do not have much in the way of antique value. If you love it like you say you do then it was a steal. Having it refinished will cost $2000 or $3000 and will not increase the value $500. But if you plan to keep it and have the money, go for it.

Lisa, many of the old players were wonderful pianos, with a rich warm tone. If it is in great condition, then the comment that it's only worth $200 is way off. You would have to check around locally in southern Oregon in the classifieds to get an idea, and check with any piano stores that sell used instruments.

As for refinishing, you could do it yourself with some research on what/how to do it. It's not necessarily difficult, but can take a long time. As with anything, it's the preparation that takes forever, the rest of the project can be fun. Easy to get in over your head though (been there)!

In the chgo area, big old uprights like yours are a dime a dozen. Many are free for the hauling. It's a shame, because many have a nice grain to the veneer, and some still sound very nice. However, a 80 year old piano will have worn parts and loose tuning pins. It costs more than a new piano to bring this old piano to like-new condition. If I could rebuild these old ones and make money on them I'd have two dozen of them in my shop - but I can't and I don't. A small percentage of the old uprights are still in very good condition, and I hope yours falls into this catagory - but even if it does, $200 is about all one could expect to get for it in Chgo.
