I have a Stuyvesant baby-grand piano and can't find any information on it. I can post the serial number tomorrow.

Are there any general websites or resources that I could find out more information about Stuyvesant pianos?

Thanks!

Where would the serial number be located on a baby grand? Sorry for the newbie question, but my piano is currently a couple states away from me, and I will be having someone look for it on my behalf.

Serial numbers on a grand could be:

- under the music desk, printed on the cast iron
plate, near the tuning pins.
- Cast or printed into the iron plate, under the
music desk or along the curved side of piano.
- Printed or carved right into the soundboard,
either above or underneath.
- Printed or carved underneath a cheekblock.
- Carved onto the keyframe
- Pasted or printed under keybed, or on a support
beam, in belly area (under piano)
- Pasted or Carved into the main action rail.
- Printed on the keys, usually at one end or the
other.
- Inside the action cavity, on a side wall.

[In any case, it may be in more than one place and should consist of 5 to 8 numbers in sequence, possibly beginning or ending with a letter.]

So, you've probably got an old piano there. How does it play?

I know that website well smile It plays very well actually. My uncle bought it off a little old lady who was moving to FL about 14 years ago. She had it since she was a child. I also got a whole chest full of sheet music, which has been fun to play, but most of it is in poor condition.

The keys are in decent shape, but there are chips and etc. on some of the keys. There are also finger nail marks along the base board board (or whatever is behind the keys where the name is) The rest of the exterior is in pretty good shape, but could use a refinishing.

Out of curiousity...is this piano worth anything? I would never sell it because it was my childhood piano, but I would look into fixing it up.

To answer your question: No, it doesn't have much monetary value at all. It does, however, have a lot of sentimental value. You are more than welcome to fix it up and enjoy a well maintained piano. Just know that any money you put into it will never come back to you. As long as you go into the repairs with those eyes open, you'll be fine!

"How much the piano is worth" depends more on how it sounds and plays than on what kind of shape the exterior is in. If the mechanism works good, and the sound is decent, then it's worth more, no matter how many gouges and chips it may have on the case, or how many keytops are missing.

If you are planning on putting any money into repairs, I'd definitely spend it on the action, the hammers, etc., IOW, the mechanism, rather than paying someone to refinish it into nothing more than a good-looking box.

And--if I were you, I'd take that crumbling sheet music down to Kwik Copy and make xeroxes, and use those. In my experience, old sheet music holds up surprisingly well--for a while. But then one day there are paper crumbs all over the piano and you pick up the music and it literally falls apart in your hands. It's really hard to xerox it when that happens.

As it is 16 years from the original posting, don't hold your breath in anticipation.

There is a lot of info on the company at this website. https://mtr.arcade-museum.com/ But you may have to thumb through a lot of magazines to find it I remember seeing a lot of their ads and if i'm not mistaken there was a couple of interviews with the founder that included his picture. Maybe you could google mtr-arcade stuyvescant and it will direct you to the magazines. It worked a few times for me in my research.

Some seem to be responding to the OP. Although it's been mentioned, I'll repeat it: The OP posted this in 2003. The thread is 16 years old and pedagogue hasn't posted since 2006!

Regards,

That explains why I have never heard of Penny although she has nearly 3000 posts. I did wonder.
