What do y'all think of Peter Serkin?
He's commin to town.

I don't have much money for those expensive big name concerts.
Is he one of the 5, 10, or 20 best pianists in the world that I should sacrifice to see?
I only go to, say, one big ticket entertainment venue every few years.
Someone like Martha Argerich I would spring for in a second.

I prefer to get some *thing* for my money, like a house, a car, or a piano.

Hi, kenny(without the "e"). I just attended a performance of Brahm's first with Serkin(w/NY Philharmonic). Wasn't impressed. I love Brahm's first. Serkin played it blandly but technically very well. If you enjoy performers who stick to what's on the sheet, then you will be pleased with Serkin. That was my perception.
Sincerely,
Kenney

I've heard Serkin, Jr. twice. Also not impressed. Though if he is doing a program of modern and contemporary music, grab it!

Last time I saw him, the concert included 35 minutes of a Reger piece that he played with music and (I think) didn't know very well. His Beethoven (Les Adieux) was so-so, and in the second half he played some very forgettable Schumann.

Could have been an off night, of course.

He's playing Brahms D minor here this weekend - I am looking forward to it.

His records (especially Messiaen) are simply superlative.

His performance of the Brahms 1st Concerto (which I didn't hear) got a terrific review in the NY Times.

I've got a recording of him playing Takemitsu's "Quotation of Dream" (a piece for two pianos and orchestra), together with Paul Crossley. It's superb, although I can't tell one pianist from the other.

I have an ice cream. I cannot mail it, for it will melt.

I've always thought Peter has tried to be a very different pianist from his father. I think the assessments that people have suggested are fair. His performances of the classical repertoire are "different" but not to everyone's liking. On the other hand, his advocacy of modern music has often been aclaimed as insightful and first tier. So...if you're looking for a knock-em down Beethoven Appassionata -- may want to look elsewhere -- but for Messiaen or Wolpe -- he has few who compete.

Ken

I agree I have two recordings of Messiaen' s "Vingt Regards du L'enfant Jesus". One on CD with Peter Hill and the opther still in vinyl with Peter Serkin. Of the two Serkin is my preference. He seems to get into the mystical nature of Messiaen's music very well.
