Does anybody know if Sir Edward Elgar wrote pieces for piano? I happen to know music written for organ (manuals) or arranged for organ (for instance, Symphony number 1, op. 55). Just out of curiosity...Regards,

Not exactly by Elgar, but there is a nice transcription of Nirmod (from Elgar's Enigma Variations) by percy Grainger.

Yes, but not very many; he didn't particularly like the piano. I only ever heard them once and they don't have the characteristic sweep and grandeur of his orchestral stuff - different style altogether.

If I remember correctly, there's one piece by him (which I neither have played nor know at all), Salut d'Amour at the www.sheetmusicarchive.net

^ AFAIK that was originally for violin and piano (it's very famous also).

One of the last pieces that Elgar wrote was a quintet for piano and strings (standard string quartet). It is a fine piece, with a heartfelt and quite moving slow movement -- a reaction to the horrors of the recently ended World War I.
I have read it with great pleasure a number of times, and I recommend it to all of you. It is worth adding to your bag of tricks.

I have a copy of his Allegro which he wrote for Fanny Davies about 1901 and was lost for many years. It was found again in 1968, recorded by John Ogden and also by John McCabe, and published by Novello in 1982. The preface says it is his only major piano work.
