I have a recital coming up and I was wondering what songs I should play.

Right now I am picking between just playing the entire Beethoven piano sonata 23...

or Liebestraume by Liszt, and only the last movement from The Beethoven piano sonata 23.
( which I love)

So the two songs or the one....
What do you people think will sound better?

I agree with Jgoo, they are called pieces, not songs.

I don't mean to be rude but I question your piano technical ability, if you can't even manage the simplest of terminology.

What d-ya mean?!? Its difficult, I have attempted it several times, maybe making it past the first page or two, but never further. I'd like some more explination, if your gona' insult me like that! Otherwise, I wouldn't have minded. (If there was a bit of explanation behind you statement).

From Canada? Rodion! What in the *&#$ is that supposed to mean?!
mad mad

Its also a pet peeve of mine when people call instrumental works 'songs'. It cheapens them somehow. (no offence to any singers out there) wink

I am making the assumption that you are studying with a teacher...so I wonder what his/her opinion is or are you allowed to choose for yourself? If this is a recital with several students you may want to find out what others are playing.....I recently attended a recital where repetition seemed to be the theme...not enough variety to keep the audience attention.

Recitals, for some, can jolt the nerves so I would suggest that you play what you love and feel most proficiant at. Tastes and levels of accomplishment vary on this board so I am sure you will get a wide range of suggestions.

Good luck with whatever you choose...keep us posted!

Anne

After reading this post I think that some of us need to be a bit nicer to each other. Classical Player is new here and we need to welcome him/her.

If I were you I would probably play Liebestraume because the other may bore the audience if they do not know classical music well.

What the ... ! Did everyone get up on the wrong side of the bed today? Like my mom used to say, "There must be bad weather coming."

Incorrect usage of the word 'song' is a pet peeves of mine also, but Classical Player cannot be faulted if s/he was never taught. It is up to us to correct p*o*l*i*t*e*l*y.

Hope everyone's day turned out pretty good.

i agree with bernard, i was making a joke about canada, nothing personal against our friend. to actually correct him or her it wouldn't be hard to do so politely.

Hey! Canada's cool!

I know, I absolutely hate it when my school friends call pieces songs. "So, what song are you learning now? What's your favorite piano song?" Grrr!!

If Classical Player is capable of playing Beethoven Op 57 in recital then I for one wouldn't be casting aspersions on his/her technical ability.

CP,

I'm not sure playing only the 3rd movt of the Beethoven is such a good idea. Those fortissimo diminished sevenths at the beginning will sound much less effective without being built up to at the end of the slow movt. So probably a good idea to play at least the slow movt as well. BTW, good luck with that Presto coda!

You know, it's interesting how everyone can talk about Zeldah so pejoratively now that she's gone (?) but no one would say those things when she was here.

Not that I'm sticking up for her or would ever have a desire to; just some food for thought.

Interesting... Zeldah could be an annoyance but, she wasn't THAT bad. So what if an argument sprung up here or there. They were fun. I just don't want to be the one behind it, is all. I like to jump in if one flares up.

An apology? I'm sorry for the miss-understanding, yes, but if you would just take a moment to hear my side of the argument:

Heres what I said:

Quote
PIECE! Call it a piece if it has no words. Thsi comes from a disscussion that we had a long time ago. Play Liebstraum. I wish that I could play that piece. Its so beautifull.

Then, heres what you said, right afterward:

Quote
I agree with Jgoo, they are called pieces, not songs.
I don't mean to be rude but I question your piano technical ability, if you can't even manage the simplest of terminology.

I'm sorry, but that does sound as though you are questioning MY technical ability, as to the fact that I said that I couldn't play Liebstraume. I mean, who eles could you have been critisizing? The only other remark before mine was:

Quote
I have a recital coming up and I was wondering what songs I should play.
Right now I am picking between just playing the entire Beethoven piano sonata 23...

or Liebestraume by Liszt, and only the last movement from The Beethoven piano sonata 23.
( which I love)

So the two songs or the one....
What do you people think will sound better?

It sounded as though you were bashing me, questioning me about my piano technical ability, saying that I couldn't even manage the simpilest of termonolgy. The simpilest of termonology..., what the heck does that even mean?

Okay look, I apologize for the mix-up, but next time, I wish that you would clarify a bit better to whom you are speaking.

jgoo, trance wasn't speaking to you about technical ability. it was an offhand comment to classical player, said because classical player's 'termInology' is all messed up - so it seems classical player's technical ability must be questionable too...get it? (sorry for the third person usage but it's hard to guess the gender on some of these names).

Ah ha! Gotcha'. Now it all makes sense to my. So, Trance, I guess that a full apology is in order... I'm sorry. frown

Its so very easy to take things on this forum the wrong way, and you have to be careful as to think through and process what others are saying. I guess that I should have realized it earlier. Okay, now, feeling a bit stupid, I think that I'll take a short break and be back in a little while.

But not until I have first replied to this. Now, I'm curious as to what has been so hardly worked on. Another graphic, I suppose...
